steve stone should come back and make more inaccurate predictions which he immediately follows up with a refusal to admit he was wrong despite multiple replays that conclusively prove that he was

I don't remember that happening too often.

Neither do I.

Bob doesn't start fights with our best reliever and make up lies. That's a plus in my book.

Stone was/is arrogant and self absorbed, for sure. But he was a very good analyst who was far easier to listen to than Otto, Carter and even Brenly.

As far as the whole 2004 fiasco, Stone was out of line. But Mercker, Alou and Co. were being freaking babies. It was an ugly situation on both sides of the equation, exacerbated by the fact the team was in the process of folding like a lawn chair. If Stone's meddling was a significant contributing factor, that doesn't say much for the team.

If a person wants to call Stone a meddling, arrogant, self-aggrandizing ass, that's fine. He is.

But he is also a fine analyst.

Chip Caray however, is a boob in all regards, as far as I can tell.

I really liked Carter, he seems like a great guy. Unfortunately listening to him analyze a game was like having an audio lobotomy.

chip/stone>len/bob primarily because stone is so good. Len/stone could be excellent, though. Len is deceptively amusing, and I bet that would really come out if he were teamed with Stone.

Nobody seems to give Brenly a fair shot since they loved Stone so much. I liked Stone a lot, but I think Brenly's gotten downright good this season after being averageish last year.

I also think a slider low and away should finish this hitter off.

I like how Stone would say this all the time like it was some kind of huge secret he had figured out.

What's that Steve? You mean this strikeout pitcher is going to try and put this batter away with an offspeed pitch low and away? Heavens to Betsy what a revelation.

I liked Stone, but, man, I thought he was overrated. I agree with you that he did make many inaccurate predictions and I think a lot of people who don't remember what you're talking about I would guess have been following the Cubs closely only over the last 5-7 years. What I really hated was how he was the master of the obvious, yet some would swear he was a genius. Such as, "Well (insert star hitter) you've fallen behind 2-0 with first base open, you might as well go ahead and intentionally walk him". Or, "Another sweeping slider right here (on a 1-2 pitch) should strike him out." Again, he was very good, but not the genius many think he is.

With Brenly, it seems like every single play is either

1)a great time to lay down a bunt

2)a great time to use the hit and run.

That's why we hired him, I guess.

Oh and yeah, that sucks about the Braves. Fox ruins baseball.

With all the revisionist history going on I thought I was reading the transcript of a Politburo meeting for a minute.

Chip was brutal. Absolutely freakin' brutal. The only way I'd take him back was if Hendry was then going to flip him to the D'Backs with Brenly for Brenneman and Grace. I'd love to have those two calling Cubs games.

No thanks. Both of them hate the Cubs now, and that's fine, as I don't care much for them, either. One of the worst parts of the '03 playoffs was Brenneman's barely suppressed glee at the cubs implosion.

And I've met stone, by the way. He was very nice to me.

I always thought that Chip suffered from "rebound guy" syndrome during his time with the Cubs. It didn't matter what he did in the booth, some Cub fans were going to dislike him simply because he wasn't Harry. Vin Scully he wasn't, but I never thought he was that bad.

All I will say about Stone is that I don't miss him nearly as much as I thought I would. (Meaning not at all. I think that Len is just as good an analyst as Stone ;))

Is it just me or is Chip Caray calling like all the TBS games lately? I want one last chance to here Skip Caray and Pete Van Wieren before Fox ruins that.

I've met both Stone and Mercker. Stone was smug and arrogant. Mercker was very friendly.

Advantage: Mercker.

I'm glad Stone is gone.

Merkcer was the nicest and least arrogant baseball player I ever met.

Len and Bob haven't been able to capture that magic feeling for me yet. Some games they let the score/situation get to them and then get too dull.

If the Cubs were better, I think they would be better ... I hope that makes sense.

I found Stone to be tedious and annoying in a Tim McCarver sort of way. It's odd but the more I learn about baseball the more I enjoy guys like Santo or Chip announcing a game. Maybe I like to listen to guys who I'd actually like to have a beer with.
