  6. Re: Mariotti Anyone who repeatedly points out how awful Dusty Baker is and starts fights with Hawk Harrelson can't be all THAT bad. Mariotti is who Chicago sports fans run to in times of crisis, because since he's perpetually bashing everyone in town, you can go "finally! someone who gets it!"

  8. Please don't ruin over a hundred years of the National and American Leagues in favor of a Western Conference and Eastern Conference. It'd never go over anyway, not in the most traditional sport of the four. I think it was Faye Vincent who tried to move the Cardinals and Cubs to the NL West and lost his job for it. I don't care for the DH, but it's fine in the AL. Keeps the leagues separate. In fact, I'd like them to go back to AL and NL umpires.
  9. We gotta let him go. We can't just rely on this guy for his five or six crappy starts every year. Don't give me that "WELL IF HE PLAYS FOR THE RAGNERS HE'LL BE GOOD AND WE LET HIM GO" stuff. What does it matter what he does elsewhere? He wouldn't have done it here with our miscoaching staff. It's the same deal with Patterson, Garciaparra, and so forth. There are too many variables here, and most of them are Dusty Baker's assistants. If he has a Cy Young year in Dallas, good for him, but he's never going to have one here. Let him go.

  22. An anecdote I once heard about Gibson (he's a bit before my time... by about 30 years). I have no idea if it's true or not, but I like it: At Spring Training, a rookie was stepping into the box to face Gibson. The rookie starts digging into the box, and McCarver stops him. "Um, kid, you probably don't wanna do that," he says to the rookie. The rookie steps out of the box, KICKS THE DIRT BACK IN to replace the dirt he dug out. Gibson still drilled him. If Bob Gibson could see the future, he'd have drilled McCarver instead
