If the O's really want Patterson (which I don't see why any team would), then why not hold out and include him in a Tejada deal? Trading him for a crappy minor leaguer when you have your sights set on a bigger deal with Baltimore doesn't make any sense.

Maybe Hendry is resigned to the fact that a Tejada deal won't happen with the Cubs. If the reports are true the O's aren't happy with Manny+ Clement + Cash. They want Abreu + a pitcher. Maybe Hendry realizes the price isn't right, and he wants to shed Patterson's salary, so he can add someone else. Trade for Zito? Shawn Green or Luis Gonzalez from the D'Backs? Trade for Soriano? I'm hoping the money saved will be put to good use (unlike the Sosa money).

Maybe. Or it could be a test trade.

if he wanted to shed patterson's salary he could have just not offered him a contract. if the cubs end up having to pay cash in this deal, i'm going to laugh my face off.

Crap. Why not keep him on the bench, spot him into action once in a while to give Murton a break against some right handers, take a chance that he'll perform well and build his value up ahead of the trade deadline?

because that would be the smart move. we've got to make room for marquis grissom to play way too much, you know.

Smart IF Corey produces. Huge if there.... $3 million or so is a lot of money for .215/.254/.602....

I highly doubt Corey ever gets it going w/ the Cubs again, but wish him the best. Seems like a good kid.

As bad as corey sucked last season, do you really expect him to be that bad again this season? This is a serious question, btw, does anyone expect him to be as bad/worse as he was in 2005?

Maybe this rumor is just a shrewd attempt by hendry to piss off Tejada even more, so that he re-demands a trade and the price tag comes down to something a little more reasonable.

Val Majewski would be an interesting pickup in place of Patterson. I'd be happier though if it were Loewen or Markakis.

I presume since the Cubs are only getting a prospect in exchange, they won't be giving Baltimore any money. No one wants to pay Patterson $3MM after his meltdown last year, so if you're not willing to pick up any of the contract, a prospect is all the more you deserve.

I like the Tribune's poll, one of the options regarding Corey is "Goodbye and good riddance." Guess which one I voted for??

Well seeing as EVERYBODY knew Patterson was gone when the season ended, the fact the Cubs are getting anything for him is surprising. I too, think if the Cubs get Majewski, it would be a fair deal. But Loewen/Markakis is WAY TO MUCH for Patterson. I'm thinking maybe it will Majewski or Erbe.

I'm torn. If any of our regular OF gets injured Corey is our only backup who has a snowball's chance of performing non-horribly in an everyday role, and he would build up value if he does well even in a part-time role. On the other hand, his refusal to play winter ball was absolutely intolerable after such a bad year, and I believe it reflects a desire to be traded. He could be a serious malcontent if he stays.

Huh? Frere Jacques, Lucky Pierre, Marquis de Sod, John Mabry, Mike Restovich. And Jerry Hairston plays some OF, too. That's six OF-ers if necessary. Patterson is flotsam.

Just reading the list of Cub OF's kinda of makes me sick.

I guess we can't have a good 4th OF because such a player would be almost as good as our regulars, and that would create tension in the clubhouse and the media.
