This depresses me. Tonight, I officially join the Fire Hendry Bandwagon. Took a while, but I'm finally there.

Well I don't mind the Jones signing, personally. If he can hit .270 (he's a career .279 hitter) with 20-25 HRs and play a good RF, it's about the best we can do. There aren't a lot of BIG bats out there for the OF, so we had to take the best available.

I'm fine with this deal. Now we just need to add a solid starter.

Prior

Zambrano

Maddux

Williams

Veteran Starter (FA/Trade)

Wood replaces Williams, and Williams gives us another solid option for an extra starter, along with Rusch.

I'm just saying the money bothered me more than the length of contract. If it was a 1 year deal at 6 million, at least he'd be off the books come next offseason, but we're stuck paying him $5 million each of the next 2 years after that.

But a difference of 1 million dollars between the first season at 5 and the 1 yr deal you use as an example is fairly inconsequential within a $100m payroll. Your point is that you would be glad his contract is off the books after one year, so don't the years actually bother you more than the money?

Someone please tell me the third year is a club option year......w/1 million buyout.

im in the minority because im not suicidal with jones on board. i think he's a GG fielder and an upgrade on burnitz. i think we're a tejada or millwood away from being contenders.

This is the worst signing Hendry has made in his venture with the Cubs, and it couldn't be more pathetic. Hat's off, Jimbo! Way to go out and snag a big bat for RF!!! Cause' it's not like Patterson couldn't put those numbers up for us this year and save us 16mil!!

Actually, you're right. The years do bother me. This means that he'll either a very expensive backup, or the starting RF'er through 2008, unless we can move him. But who, other than Hendry, would want Freedom Fries Jones?

Screw it I'm going to get heroin.

Why bother? A bottle of Liquid Drano is a lot cheaper.

It's an OLD ENGLISH night if you ask me. EDWARD 40HANDS!

I'm on my third bottle of Dos Equis. I'm not gonna quit until I've forgotten about this signing. :D

And your plan to get tejada is...

Trade everyone. Heck, trade Murton and whomever and try to land Tejada and Abreu.

Might as well. They're all gonna be blocked by these stupid Hendry signings anyway.

Defense is not nearly as important in baseball as it is in the other major sports. Gold Glove defense is not that great if the guy providing it is hitting .230 and not getting on base more than 30% of the time. You'd be better off taking a 40 point raise in OBP and a downgrade on the defense.

Is there some sort of equation out there that figures out how many runs a Gold Glove right fielder saves with his defense over the league average?

But even then, we're only contenders if everything goes right - Z, Prior, Wood and Aramis are healthy, Dempster and Lee have to maintain their 2005 success and Pierre has to rebound. All that has to happen just to keep the Cubs in contention in 2005.

I'm not suicidal on Jones, I figured he or Encarnacion were coming. I'm disappointed in the years, because his signing will now affect personnel decisions all the way till 2008.

And this is another strike against Hendry. Even when he has talent, young cheap talent, he refuses to use it. He either overpays for folks like Pierre, or lets em rot like DuBois. MAKE A TRADE PLEASE!

The abuse Hendry is getting on this board is way over the top.

Is anyone sure that Giles even WANTED to come play for the Cubs? Have the Phillies continued to insist on Z or Prior in exchange for Abreu? There is SO MUCH we can't know about individual players or GMs.

The biggest problem the Cubs have faced is that production from Sosa and CPatt absolutely cratered from 2003 in a way almost NEVER seen in the history of baseball. That's two huge holes that the Cubs could not have foreseen. If teams want Pie or Hill or Prior or Z for mediocre talent or aging ballplayers, I can see why Hendry has not made "THE BIG TRADE." If the Orioles are rational, then the Cubs have a chance of landing Tejada. Given the ownership, that might be a big IF.

Yeah, Cpatt was the reason we didn't win games last year. It was all his fault.

Are you just trying to be different or do you actually believe this stuff?

Yes, I do believe it.

Let's give Pierre a an extension to top it off.

I'll do you one better. Let's give Dusty a 5-year extention while we're at it, trade the farm for Alfonseca and Heredia, and give Doug Mientkieaveoiweascz an A-Rod like deal because he plays good D, too.

Baseball Prospectus calculates FRAR, which is fielding runs saved over replacement.

Can someone post that, please? I would like to know just how many runs Jacques "Savior" Jones is going to save us this year in right.
