He's the next Abreu.

Seriously, look at his numbers last year.

Wow. I knew the kid was good, but holy crap!! He really should not be wasting his talent in Pittsburgh. He should be on the north side of Chicago wasting it.

I'd even trade Murton for him.

I think he's just good. My fantasy team thinks so too.

Bay is an absolute stud. I can only assume the Pirates made some kind of informal promise to Bay to at least put up a marginal effort to win payroll-wise, otherwise I can't imagine him signing the dotted line for 5 years.

I'd kill for Bay in left field, though. Probably the most underrated player in the majors.

Bay's a good player, I like him a lot. Just throwing out there what looks like a real oddity. You don't see a lot of players just jump 70-100 points in slugging from their minor league numbers. His BABIP has been pointed out by others in the past.

4 year 18.25 million is what the deal is for. Good deal for the Pirates.

Wow, that's a heck of a good deal. 4/40 is more market value for him, imo.

I'd pay 4/40 for Bay in a second. That's one hell of a hometown discount he's giving the Buckos.

Remember that Bay isn't arbitration eligible until after next season. It's probably less than what he would've gotten had he gone to arbitration all 3 years, but remember the Pirates have him under their control for all 4 years regardless.

EDIT: This isn't really much of a discount. He's trading a couple million dollars he could get if his production stays the same for the security of guaranteed money. Hafner, Vic Martinez, Blalock, and Michael Young have done the same thing.

Bay would get that or more if he was FA eligible. I think he's still 3 years or more away from FA's.

exactly, he was going to be pretty much free next year anyway.

well...

hes gonna get more chances to beat up on us and break our hearts (sigh)

Something tells me...this Murton kid will be right there with Bay. Maybe not much with the power, but all-around skills. I like Jason Bay, and I would trade Scott Rolen, Anthony Reyes, and Yadier Molina (cause Pujols would be overpaying) for Bay....and the Cards get Todd Walker, Jose Macias, and Mark Redman. That's a fair trade.

Good point NSAvenger. Murton has the tools, the plate discipline, and if the end of 2005 showed us anything, maybe even the power to be right on Bay's level. Now whether he is able to do that or if he becomes another minor-league Cubs bust, we shall see. I'd bet closer to the former.

Interesting comparison. Bay is much more athletic than Murton though, although Matt has surprising athletic ability for his size. I don't think Murton has the wingspan of Bay, though, or the ability to take the ball out to all parts of the park. I'd settle for Murton becoming a poor man's Jason Bay.
