If true, the line to storm the Cubs offices starts behind me. I'll buy the torches and the pitchforks.

About the only thing keeping me from going nuts is the fact that it's Rosenthal.

Why is anyone surprised by this? I thought it was pretty much common knowledge that Hendry lets Dusty put together the bench.

Only problem is it's not the bench...

There won't be much of a competition. It will be Neifi's to lose. He's an alright 8 hitter & a good fielder. Unfortunately, Baker will find a way to get him in the top of the order.

Yeah, that line about competing with Cedeno is funny.

The thing is, this Rosenthal report contradicts everything that's been reported about the Cubs going with Cedeno and Murton in the everyday lineup. Let's hope it's just a lazy reporter trying to fill space in a column.

Well, maybe there's still hope. Neifi was quoted as saying that he wants to be the "everyday" starter, so maybe another team can promise him that. Or I could just be in delusional denial...

Ken Rosenthals 11/4 article says:

The Cubs are talking about re-signing infielder Neifi Perez to a two-year deal — even after exercising second baseman Todd Walker's $2.5 million option for 2006. If the Cubs sign Furcal, they can trade Walker and allow Perez and Ronny Cedeno to compete at second base next spring. Perez, 32, sports a paltry career .301 on-base percentage, and he grounded into 22 double plays last season, third most in the NL. His nine homers and 54 RBIs, however, represented his highest totals since 2000, when he was with the Rockies …

If Hendry does this he is an idiot. Neifi deserves a one year deal tops. I will really be disappointed if he gets a starting job.

Hendry cannot be that dumb. Right?? 8-[ Hopefully there is no rush to sign him and Neifi is showered with offers to start elsewhere.

Hendry brings him back and I quit. I don't need this crap. I don't deserve this crap. I have stuck around for 20 years of this crap and I just can't take us employing Neifi Perez for a third straight year. This makes me really want Furcal and a trade for Soriano(obp aside) I cannot handle antoher year of Neifi.

i agree, i cant believe i want Soriano as much as i do now. Just anything to make sure Neifi won't be a starter.

I'm still holding out hope that all the trade Walker stuff in nonsense. Then, if they pick up Furcal, this is all a moot point.

This made me think Nomar is gone and Furcal is not coming here...

"Don't you all remember what Neifi did for us, last year dude?"

"Ronnie Cedeno?"

"I went 0 for 2848 in my major league debut, Ronnie's still gotta pay his dues, dude."

if the cubs sign neifi and trade walker, i don't know what i'll do. they'd be making similar $, so the cubs would essentially be saying that neifi > walker.
Posted
On one hand, bringing Neifi back isn't a bad move because he can play more than one position and he can get base hits off the bench. However, two years is just flat out stupid and with Dustbrain at the helms, there's a good chance that Neifi will start everyday. Man I really hope that this isn't true. What's next? Macias signed to a 7 year extension?

i think it's time to start hoping that the cubs offseason is so comically bad that we can enjoy it perversely, since we sure aren't going to have much fun watching things transpire on a conventional level.

What's next?

Mizzou, with this regime, that is a very dangerous question.

We all know the answer is long term extensions for Dusty and Hendry.

That would create more anger here than a Neifi contract extension, I'm sure.

We can use my apartment as a rallying point.

Obviously not, since we are so far into the offseason and so many teams have made moves and Hendry is just screwing up left and right.

Seems to me that are always going to be some people hoping for a bad offseason because they seem to get more enjoyment from ripping mistakes (real or perceived) by Hendry, Baker, etc. than they get when the team is succesful.

i think im going to have a lot more fun enjoying the cubs preposterous failures than you're going to have waiting for them to be good.

im hoping for a good offseason. but im sure as hell not expecting it, or anything close to it.

My sanity may depend on that.

I wonder if the Cubs are thinking of signing Perez as a "recruiting tool" to land Furcal? I remember reading that the two are somewhat close. I don't agree with this but it may be in the thought process. I do see this as a move Hendry would do and since the Cubs are pushing this defense thing all together possible.
