Ken Rosenthals 11/4 article says:

The Cubs are talking about re-signing infielder Neifi Perez to a two-year deal — even after exercising second baseman Todd Walker's $2.5 million option for 2006. If the Cubs sign Furcal, they can trade Walker and allow Perez and Ronny Cedeno to compete at second base next spring. Perez, 32, sports a paltry career .301 on-base percentage, and he grounded into 22 double plays last season, third most in the NL. His nine homers and 54 RBIs, however, represented his highest totals since 2000, when he was with the Rockies …

If Hendry does this he is an idiot. Neifi deserves a one year deal tops. I will really be disappointed if he gets a starting job.

Dusty needs to stop thinking he is the GM, and allow Hendry to fill a COMPETITE team, not an "All Boys Clubs."

Hendry has to BE the GM.

If he signs Neifi! again, it's all on him. Just like hiring -- and not firing -- Dusty is all on him.

Well I call shenanigans. Since when has Ken Rosenthal ever been right? His track record is hardly better than Gammons. If Rosenthal says it, it is most likely not going to be true (he says hopingly).

I think Rosenthal's credibilty took a hit:

The Royals will make a run free-agent shortstop Rafael Furcal, FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal reports.

GM Allard Baird has the money to sign one or two prime free agents, but there's little chance he'll land one. None of the top players are going to pick Kansas City if the money is comparable elsewhere. In the highly unlikely event that Furcal actually does end up with the Royals, the team would shop Angel Berroa and move him to second if there are no takers. Nov. 5 - 3:16 am et

"The Royals", Ken? :pig:

SERENITY NOW!!!

Here's hoping one of those other teams that loses out on Furcal will pick up Perez and offer him an everyday SS job.

Insanity sooner rather than later in this case, I'm afraid

First: consider the source.

Second: So long as he's not starting, I am less concerned.

If Neifi comes back and his only competition for a starting spot is a rookie, guess who starts.

My problem isn't with Neifi. My problem is with how Dusty uses him. He should never bat 1st or 2nd in any line-up. 7th or 8th & that's it. JH just say NO to Neifi!!

Better late than never. Welcome aboard.

Hendry cannot be that dumb. Right?? 8-[ Hopefully there is no rush to sign him and Neifi is showered with offers to start elsewhere.

Hendry brings him back and I quit. I don't need this crap. I don't deserve this crap. I have stuck around for 20 years of this crap and I just can't take us employing Neifi Perez for a third straight year. This makes me really want Furcal and a trade for Soriano(obp aside) I cannot handle antoher year of Neifi.

I'm sure that Neifi is going to be asking for $3M+ a year too, which makes it worse. With Hendry's recent signing of Rusch ($3M over 2 years) for insurance purposes, this seems like Ken Rosenthal could have a scoop. Either Hendry has a greatly increased budget or he is considering blowing it to basically bring back the same sub .500 team.

All great points. I also add that Hendry seems to reward past production/loyalty instead of future probability.

If this is true, it's almost like he feels he owes it Perez to give him another contract because he filled in so well.

Loyalty is not a good trait for a GM.

He filled in so well?

.274/.298/.383 in '05

it's not even way above his career totals:

.270/.301/.380

Neifi sucks and always has sucked. No way does he deserve to start.
