Not to be insensitive or anything, but I can only imagine what this will do to Grudz's market value (or any other middle infield on the market). Thanks, Hendry.

At this point I wish we'd have gotten Grudz back even if it was for more money. If we trade Walker I might just .... drink some beer.

I am closer to killing myself after this signing.

Just wait, I bet the next big move has something to do with Macias.

Nothing beats stockpiling the game's most useless players. What a thrill for the fans!

I hear Mario Mendoza wants to make a comeback.

Some teams use the off-season to progress or regress, these two moves point to stagnation. Could it be part of a master plan? Sure, face value tells me these two moves whether Rusch is a 6th starter or Neifi as the utility are extremely overpaid for their production.

There would have been no teams willing to spend that type of money for those two and as they did with Maddux, the Cubs end up losing bid wars against themselves.

Regardless of their potential roles, they are way overpaid in both years and dollars.

My beliefs towards a building and maintaining a productive team and the Cubs beliefs run completely against each other and it frustrates the hell out of me.

Looking @ it from an optimistic perspective, it gives the Cubs the ability to use Jerome Williams, Rich Hill & Cedeno in a trade or trades, which can net a starting pitcher or OF.

Combined they'll likely make about 1/5th of what Rusch/Perez will. Overpaying and bidding against yourself doesn't excuse anything.

You want to use Williams, Hill, and Cedeno for trade? Great but, that doesn't excuse kicking yourself in the groin in the process.

Everyone focuses on which role they play under Baker, look at what they are making and what their past production merits. To me, they're both severely overpaid, regardless of roles.

The more I think about Rusch and Neifi the more angry I get. I want ram a fork into my own eyes. This is really the most idiotic and moronic organization that I've EVER seen. WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY? There are SO MANY BETTER options. I hope I run into Hendry on the street one day. I'd like to give him a piece of my mind.

I wish I wasn't a fan, I really, truly do.

Assuming that Hendry signs Furcal, Burnett, and BJ Ryan then trades for Pierre and Abreu, I think it could be a good offseason for the Cubs.

I don't know if it's been posted yet, but maybe Neifi received a smiliar offer from another team to start, then gave Hendry a chance to match, which he did most likely at the strong urging of dusty.

Perhaps that could mean he's hasn't been signed as a starter though he still wound up with starter money.

Where do you get "bidding against yourself???"

Hendry should have paid for his taxi to the airport.

I don't think other teams are allowed to negotiate with Neifi.

Not until Friday they weren't.

No team could have discussed finances with Neifi, so no, that's not a possibility.

Considering that Neifi got $1 million for 2005 and had a better season in 2005 than 2004, and that he can play 2b and SS quite well, his value was probably around $2 million. Heck his number's are just as good as Orlando Cabrera's.

Hopefully Hendry has deals in place for Abreu & CoCo Crisp & is on the verge of signing Giles and Furcal. :o

It's what we mean by Hendry giving Neifi much more money than anyone would have offered him. A much lesser offer would have landed Neifi, but Hendry topped that, ergo "bidding against himself".

All you managed to do with this post is prove that Neifi was overpaid last year as well. I want nothing to do with Orlando Cabrera, either.

Sure, in our minds he was overpaid, as is Orlando Cabrera, but market forces are what they are. The reality is what it is whether we agree with it or not.

Bidding against yourself, that's when you overpay for a player that has limited buyers or hasn't been avail. for other teams to bid on.

The Cubs overpaid on Perez and Rusch before gauging a more accurate market for both these players.

Some people think the increase in payroll is directly from ticket sales increase from '03. They're wrong!

The increase in payroll is from the depletion of the scouting budget especially with International FAs (not Matsui) but players from the Dominican Republic and Venezuela as well as the Pacific Rim. Going from Leon Lee to the MLBScouting Bureau, what kind of garbage is that? Leon Lee was very successful at what he did and while he left to coach in Japan, why not fill his position instead of using the MLBSB?

What has happened to the Venezuela program, Pie was signed in July of '01 I believe, who was the last top prospect since then to come from Latin america?

Even though it's an arbitrary system, how many of BAs top 30 prospects are International (of course, I'm talking about the Cubs top 30)?

How poorly has the farm system regressed? It isn't b/c of a lack of a top 5 pick either, more so a severe drop-off from Latin America and the Pacific Rim.

The Cubs aren't trying to become the Yankees, the Yankees still spend a boatload in the DR and overseas. The Cubs are trying to become the Cards without a GM who spends wisely.

It simply won't work like that.

No one has been able to explain why the International FAs well has run dry.

It has had a far greater negative impact on this team than the positives from spending more.

What market? No one else had the chance to bid on Neifury.

Preach it, UK.

Preach it, UK.

Finally. A religion I feel comfortable tithing to.

Can I tithe to it too, as a Cards fan? Even though Matt Morris is on UK's list of most loathsome baseball players? I always appreciate UK's baseball wisdom.
