"I talked to him [Monday] night and I told him I would be happy for him to come to the Cubs," Perez said. "I know what he can do to make the team win. When you've got a guy like Furcal at the top of your lineup, a lot of things happen. He could be on base two or three times for Derrek Lee and Aramis [Ramirez]."

Yeah, too bad you couldn't be on base that often, Neifi.

I like my sig better.

I do too.

But to be fair, you misquoted him. He didn't say he will be on base 2-3 times. He said he could be. And on certain days, that will certainly be true.

I copied it directly from an article earlier. They either changed it or it's at a different link.

EDIT: Fuzzy math

It could just be a different reporter. Was it off of ChicagoSports.com? That's where I got mine.

This may a glimpse into just how inaccurately sportswriters quote the managers and players we follow.

Your statement only makes sense if Cedeno isn't starting. What if Cedeno is starting like so many articles are saying he will? Someone is going to have to back him up. Whether its Cedeno and Walker or Furcal and Cedeno, someone is going to have to be the back-up SS.

Especially if the Cobs are going with Furcal, it's a better use of the money to keep Todd for 2nd and use Cedeno as the primary backup. I guess I'm expecting the Cobs to be able to figure that out when that obviously doesn't seem to be the case, though.

Kind of off-topic, I'm hoping that Cedeno can provide much more than a "comparable performace" to what Neifi could do.

So am I, but I'm not willing to guarantee much.

without reading the previous 28 (premium) pages, has anyone said anything positive?

I'll take a wild guess that the labels idiot, stupid and moron have been used over 100 times in the this thread. There's no decorum today. Hmmmm guess it's just your typical Neifi/Dusty thread. ;)

CubsWin and CubsfaninCA have.

I wouldn't say that I have said anything positive. I would challenge anyone to quote me saying that this was a good signing or anything of the sort.

I have presented some evidence that seems to counter those that have said that it was a terrible signing.

I have presented evidence countering those that are calling for Hendry's job.

I have presented evidence that counters those who fear that Neifi will be a starter on this team.

I have presented evidence that demostrates that spending 2.5 million for a veteran SS who has won a gold glove and is coming off of the type of year Neifi had, which btw is right in line with his career averages, and is signing with a team that has the kind of payroll the Cubs have isn't outside of what the market has been producing on other teams.

Basically, I have been trying to be the voice of reason in my own way. But I doubt I succeeded.

My own personal feelings I have yet to express. I'm waiting to see the big picture. If signing Neifi helps land Furcal, great. If Neifi does indeed come off the bench, great. And if the 2.5 million doesn't prevent Hendry from signing others (i.e. Hendry doesn't give the reason that this guy got away because we couldn't fit him into our payroll by a couple million), then this signing might be okay. I don't think that Neifi Perez is one of the worst back-up SS in the major leagues. But maybe I'm wrong.

I wonder if Jeff Blauser is available?

Jeff Blauser would probably be a better option. At least he put up OBP's in the .340's in his two otherwise abysmal seasons here.

NO NO NO NO NO. Neifi has accumulated 57% of his career at bats as a member of the Colorado Rockies. Even if I don't need to explain the significance of that to you, I will anyway: 2005 was far in excess of Neifi's career norms, possibly even a career year. He is extremely likely to be for the 2006 Cubs what Tony Womack was for the 2005 Yankees.

I'd feel a lot better about this signing if both of the following take place:

1. Furcal isn't signed, Walker is kept to start at 2B, Cedeno starts at SS, and Neifi is the primary backup at SS with Hairston backing up 2B.

2. The money that would have been used to sign Furcal is instead used to address the outfield situation.

I will never be happy with the money that Perez is getting or the fact that he was signed for two years. BUT if Cedeno is given a legit chance to start at SS and Walker isn't dealt, then Neifi is fine as a backup. He actually does have some value in that role. I personally don't think that value is $2.5 million though.

If the only competition for a middle infield spot is Cedeno, then Neifi WILL start. It baffles me that anyone could believe otherwise.

Cedeno is going to have to be hot out of the gate. The only good news i see is that Cedeno is being mentioned as the "starter" whereas guys like Dubois were only deserving of a "shot" in Hendry's words.

I don't doubt that, even in the best case, Neifi will start more than he should.

One difference between the Dubois and Cedeno situations is that Baker, like Hendry, prefers guys with natural athleticism and multiple skills.

Dubois' limited skill set doomed him from the start in Dusty's eyes.

Since Neifi being signed was announced, Hendry was called an idiot, stupid, or a moron 5 times total, by a total of 4 posters. Maybe even 4 and 3 if you don't consider this:

"If Neifi Perez is our starting shortstop or second basemen next year, I might just have to take a season off of watching baseball. Just, jesus, how can you be so stupid? "

to be calling him stupid.

Without looking it up, I would wager that there are more people are calling the signing stupid then there are calling Hendry stupid. Calling a decision stupid and calling the person that made that decision stupid are two completely different things.

I don't know if anyone has posted this or not, but this is a line from the most recent post on The Cub Reporter (http://www.all-baseball.com/cubreporter/index.html)

Anyone who thinks that Dusty can be handed a loaded Neifi without expecting him to point it at the lineup hasn’t been paying attention the last few years.

Whether you agree with the point of the statement or not is irrelevant. It's just a funny statement.

But a loaded Neifi is better than a loaded Furcal...
