oh, and I have to add that first inning curtain calls on solo homeruns are showing up the other team in my book also. you'd think the "worlds greatest fans" would have a little more class.

I understand what you are saying but have you ever noticed how players sign discounts and waive no-trade clauses just to play in st louis?

The Cardinals are a well run organization. I don't think that has anything to do with their fans though. And I do think the discounts are a bit overstated. Declaring St. Louis the best baseball city is ridiculous and indicative of feelings of inferiority. But whatever, Card fans are great in their own minds.

Sorry, the post I made wasn't very clear.

I don't claim stl has the best baseball fans. However, I do think players like playing there in part because of the fans and that can lead to "friendly" discounts. Did I overstate it? Most likely. And is it the only factor? No way.

Now lets let this dog die

Ugh, I saw that this thread had balooned in size, so I thought there might be some actual baseball talk. Instead it's the usual crew humping each other over what great fans they are.

At the risk of injecting some baseball discussion here I ask these questions:

1) Are the White Sox and Astros the two worst offenses to make it to the WS? (THat is if they advance)

2) Would a Astros- White Sox WS be the lowest rated ever?

3) If the Cards were to win these last 2 games will the Astros ever recover after being 1 strike away from the WS?

White Sox seem to believe they have a great offense "with power up and down the lineup".

1) Combined? Yes. You have two average to below-average offenses and if they both made it you would probably see the worst total offensive output ever in the Series.

2) It would be among them. I have a hard time believing anything will top Marlins/Indians in that department, though.

3) If the Cards win this series, Astros fans officially fall into the Cubs/Indians camp of tortured fans (albeit in a lower spot since they've been around a shorter time).

Regarding #2, if you recall, the 1982 and 1985 series were played between very small cities (Milwaukee and St. Louis) and (KC and St. Louis).

National ratings were not good.

Lowest rated was Angels/Giants in '02 followed by Yankees/Mets in '00 and then I believe Indians/Marlins.

So far, I've come to conclusion that are players are torn between deciding to play in front of the "best" fans in STL in MLB or the "best" manager in MLB with Dusty Baker.

Quite an epic battle we have on our hands with these two magnetic forces.

but ESPN said that was the series everyone wanted to see! Too bad on the giants angels because that was a great series.

hahaha! Yea, we got a great discount on Burnitz. To me, most teams have about 10,000 great fans and the rest are bandwagoners, tourists, and people taking outings with the family or work or whatever. To proclaim your fans the greatest is silly.

Their track record speaks volumes. What is it now?

Five division titles in six years, what, some fifteen world championships, how many pennants? 24?

For the record......

          1876 thru 2004 World Series
team W L pct PA W L

Every single team in MLB claims to have the best fans in baseball. Every player claims that the team he is currently playing for has the best fans. Go figure.

Clearly, however, there are some cities that are better baseball cities than others.

Thats true. St louis has great fans, but Chicago has great fans as well. I dont see how there is an way to distinguish which ones are "the best".

There isn't. All I was saying is that the players prefer St. Louis fans. "The best" is a pretty arbitrary term, though.

Right. St. Louis players prefer St. Louis fans while Cubs players prefer Cub fans.

A survey of ALL players a couple of years ago indicated that almost 50% of ALL players said that St. Louis has the best fans.

Does it mean that St. Louis has the best fans? No. I'm just telling you what the players think, and I'm not just making things up.
