They should reseed after the WC round like football however.  Especially in the AL.

Phillies too are laying down against a poor excuse for a major league pitcher, Cole Sulser, 36 years old, boasting a robust career WAR of 2.5.  The awesome Nick Fortes with a HR to help the Rays probably beat the Phillies tonight.

I know it's bad, at least they're in, not like 2004 - Victor Diaz with quite literally the biggest hit of a not-so-great career, the a-hole Reds - Dunn, Kearns and whatever the other f**kwad OFer - man, that sucked.

Phillies lose, so the Cubs are back in the #2 WC spot.

And if the Dbacks can beat the Padres tonight, they are only a game back of the Phillies with the tiebreaker in hand.  That would be a very improbable comeback if they can pull it off.

I mean that team won 89 games. We’d be in the same exact boat as the 2004 team if the playoff format was the same. Come into the last 2 weeks with a lead and watch it slowly trickle away with close losses to bad or disinterested teams.

So we’re a near lock to play at SD now right? Only way we get WC1 is with a win and 3 SD losses. And we only drop to 3 with a loss and two Philly wins.

Out of morbid curiosity I looked up the 2004 Reds, didn't realize their team pitching WAR was -6.2.  You'd thought there were better than that with the way the shut the Cubs down in that series.  2004 was truly an instance of tight team trying too hard.

Even if they get a starter to go a decent 5 innings,  then you need to hope the bats are putting up a few runs, and pray the bullpen can get them 4 good ones.

Leading the wildcard most of the year then tanking in the final couple of weeks is really nice to see.

If they finish in the 3rd WC spot they face the Dodgers not the Brewers in the 2nd round.

Watching the Padres and Diamondbacks, remind me again, why the Padres are soooooo good?  Fact is all of the Cubs, Phillies, Padres and, possibly Diamondbacks, are flawed teams and, despite what many here would like to believe, neither is head and shoulders above the other.
