And Hornsby won an MVP with the Cubs. You cannot honestly be arguing Madlock was anywhere near the player Hornsby was, can you? Plus, Madlock played at a position the Cubs had 4 really good players at, for a number of years.
2nd base, aside from Sandberg, really hasn’t had anyone that good.

This in true. But they might give him a QO that he might take. That wouldn’t be terrible.

agreed, totally fine 'letting him walk', don't think it's super necessary to 'fire him into the sun'. And also not sure what the alternative is. Because I certainly don't want it to be Pedro Ramirez (.301 xwOBA, not a four time gold glove winning outfielder) or Matt Shaw (.301 xwOBA, not a four time gold glove winning outfielder, terrible person).

He said Madlock didn't play here long, Hornsby only played 1 more year (4-3) with the Cubs.

Phil Cavarretta won an mvp too, Hornsby was more of a Cardinal than a Cub

Im not chirping that Madlock should or shouldn't be on that list, he was just part of names that one could argue could be on it.

He has a 113 wRC in August. 

He's definitely taken a step back from the normal performance he's consistently given us and the underlying metrics don't necessarily predict an offsetting hot streak, but every time this comes up it's inevitably 'if you ignore all the good stuff he does, he's bad'

I think the problem with Madlock was more the position than him not being here long enough. Cubs had 4 guys whose best part of their career was with the Cubs and all very good. And only being here 3 years probably also was a factor. But has he been a second baseman. As an example, I would think he would be on the team.

There are worse things than Happ on a one year deal. I don’t think they would be playing a “bluff” game. I think they would be fine if he took the QO.

I think theres a 50/50 chance they offer it if theres no other/better option, maybe they find a veteran to split time out there with Alcantara.

If they feel highly of their 3 top OF prospects in Hartshorn, Conrad, and Kepley,  theyll need to bridge a year or so until they're ready to come up.

I would be fine with it. I also don’t know for certain he would take it. Most likely he will end the year with a WAR over 3.0. That will be his 5th straight year where he was between 3.0 and 4.5. I am not sure he can’t get a 3 year deal at $57M to $63M. He might take the years over just a one year deal.
