Why do people want Detmers so much, not just here but on X too, or is he like a last option type if they can't get anyone better

Because he might end up being the best pitcher traded

And he fills a hole for 2 years

Because he is good. His FIP pitching the last two years ago was 3.36 and this year 3.12. His WHIP is a little over 1 this year. He strikes out more than 10 batters per 9 innings and he is under control for 2 years after this one. Exactly who do you think is better or a bigger value?

Arredondo was not ranked among Rangers top prospects on Pipeline or FG.

Looks like a 19 year old holding his own in A-Ball. Decent listed size. Making a lot of contact at least.

I don't think there's an either-or with Shaw and Ramirez.  There are not enough at bats to go around for them to both play the infield sure, but Shaw as a full time or nearly full time OF and Ramirez in the exact role he's in right now is an easily tenable situation.

I think the guy getting the squeeze is Mo.  Pedro's staking claim to some of those LH at bats from the DH spot.  If Mo's not trusted to catch 50+ games next year not sure how you fit him and Ramirez onto the same roster.

Yeah Mo needs to catch next year to easily fit on the roster.   I think they'll give him a shot with runway at C.  Looks like he's split time 50/50 at catcher in Iowa this year.

Ramirez has 45 innings in LF across all levels, including 1 inning in LF this year in MLB.  I guess he's an option there next year., but he fits his current role better as you say. Though Shaw can probably play anywhere Pedro can but better defensively.  They might prefer Shaw at 3b and Ramirez in OF or DH on the days Bregman needs a rest.  IMO the ideal role for Shaw on this team is supersub.

I think any of our current top 10 position prospects are expendable in trade & imagine the Cubs want to keep the pitchers if possible.

Angels need a catcher even more now you say?

Didn't they say the Angels were interested in a young catcher?  Something must be happening.  Or, O'Happe simply sucks?

Per Mooney and the Athletic:

The Cubs are interested in Tarik Skubal and are weighing options. They outlined that there are lots of ties between Skubal and the Cubs that make sense and that acquiring him could be a head start on singing him.

It's notable in that Mooney and Sharma don't drop names like that. It isn't a "Cubs are all in on Skubal and are front runners".  But it is certainly something worth a monitor. When they drop names it's more than just a passing mention.

Is Shaw better defensively than Ramirez?

Is Shaw even alive? Where's he at?

Sprained wrist. Team thinks he will start swinging after TDL

I like them I think they do good work but I'm not getting my hopes up on this one and I'll believe it when I see it.

Interesting.  I really don't want Skubal for the high price we have to pay for a few months.  I'm hoping the Tigers won't trade him, but they lost again today.

Not sure what there is to believe or see in that I doubt it actually happens, but their interest can still be real. It's a long shot the Cubs acquire Skubal. Not only do they have to meet the Tigers price they will also have to beat out the rest of the teams.

I'd take this as a sign that the Cubs are serious about Skubal with the knowledge that it's unlikely that they can both beat everyone else in prospects and get to a point where they can fully accept the price.

But that the Cubs are also weighing that as an option should give everyone a decent idea of where the Cubs are in terms of the deadline. They aren't delusional and understand the price there and have some ability to stomach it. That should mean they will also pursuit the other best options and controlled options.

Gotta look past the ERA.  The Angels suck, defense included.

So the "ties with the Cubs" Mooney outlined were Hoyer's relationship with Tigers POBO Scott Harris, who was in the Cubs FO in 2016, and that Skubal has "deep roots in Arizona, which would make spring training at the Cubs’ Mesa complex an appealing and convenient feature once he weighs his options as a free agent" The second one seems like a huge stretch, half the damn teams have complexes in AZ.

If you could get e.g. Skubal, Detmers, and a good closer-caliber reliever for any combination among our top 15 prospects, besides the top 3 or so pitchers, you do it.

You'd probably like to also keep one of our top OF prospects, but not a huge deal.

We have the best position players in baseball in terms of WAR this year.   The team has serious WS potential with pitching help.

If we were in first place I think Jed would be even more aggressive.  He's mentioned that the 1st round bye is a huge advantage and factors into how hard you push in trade deadline decisions.

I’d pay a kings ransom for Tarik Skubal. He’s THAT good. The only player that is in the entire Chicago Cubs organization that I wouldn’t put in the deal is Pete Crow Armstrong. That’s it. Cade Horton? Take him. Hartshorn? He’s yours. I don’t care. Get him and give him a blank check in the offseason. Maybe the fan in me is getting carried away, but whatever. I want one of the best pitchers on the planet to go with one of the best all around players on the planet for this year and the next however many years.

Yeah the Cubs have never even signed a top SP FA since Lester, and Jed has never done it and no real signs of coming close from my memory.  Skubal FA seems a stretch.  But Cubs have a bunch of money coming off the books this winter, lots of SP signings/trades incoming.
