You do realize he was at less than 70 pitches and they don't have an off day tomorrow? I know its frustrating but its mid May

I wasn't aware that a win in May is worth less than a win in September.

The Cubs should not be playing the "save the bullpen" game when they have a 2 or 3 run lead in a rubber match against a rival.  Whether it's in April or October.

Once again, Counsell trying to let a vet get thru 5 innings and qualify for a meaningless win then doing what's best for the team.  lol at not having anybody warming up before this inning started..

you honestly cannot think he left him in so maybe he gets a win. That is just a bad take. While I agree he could have taken him out earlier, the issue is the pen he has. It’s not good. He is trying to squeeze innings out of the rotation a little. But NOT so a pitcher can get a win.!

Of course the Cubs first inning they don’t get at least 2 baserunners on

Kelly’s double was hit too hard, -1 runs, Murakamis grounder wasn’t hit hard enough to turn a double play, +2 runs.

Wow, you are missing the point completely.

Sox are not a rival in the sense of it mattering in the NL. And he was at 70 pitches.

"with the pen he has"... the pen that just came in and ended the threat right away last inning and is off to a good start this inning.  The pen that delivered in game 1 of this series.

I don't care what CC's reasoning is.  It is an indefensibly bad decision.  If they lose this game it's on him.

Doesn't mean they shouldn't put their best foot forward and try to win.  Also they took him out anyways so I don't see your point.  What's the difference of his night ending at 70 pitches vs. 83

And, of course, if the pen came in and Vargas hit a 3 run homer against that pitcher, it would have been Craig fault for bringing a relief pitcher in.

They took him out after Vargas crushed the ball. He was done. You are just being very irrational right now. He came out because Monty was coming up. Webb is better against lefties and Rea was done.

But that isn't what happened.  What happened is:

#8 hitter being walked on 4 pitches

#9 hitter inches away from a home run

(Any good manager would take out the pitcher at this point)

Instead, he gets to face the top of their lineup for the 3rd time and instantly blows the lead.  Shocker.

No, I think everyone is against your opinion just by the responses.

Go Cubs!

For my part it was your assertion that CC was leaving him in just to get a guy a win.

Yeah, that part is probably irrational and the fan inside me talking.

But objectively I just think it was a really poor decision.

Me too. That was the ridiculous point of the post. I get the idea of taking him out. I was wondering it too. But I also understand it is a 50/50 call on that decision. It isn’t as cut and dry as he should have taken him out. All things considered I am sure he was hoping to get 5 out of him.  Save the pen a bit for the next series.

Plus PCA almost made a very good catch to end the inning at 4-2. Luck seems to be going against the Cubs today.  It could be 5-1 instead of 4-4

Vargas would have gotten a hit against prime Randy Johnson if he was in a Cubs uniform. they need to horsefeathers re-evaluate the game plan against him

Vargas isn’t even the most annoying Cub killer on the Sox. It’s actually Grichuk, but Vargas will pass him soon.

The WS aren’t a great team but they aren’t bad.  Cubs are tied with Cincy for the worst road record in the division which surprises me given 2 10 game winning streaks.  But here we are.

Am I misremembering or didn't Vargas try to start a fight with someone on the Cubs last year at Wrigley?  He's one of those guys that I'd love if he was on the Cubs, but can't stand on another team
