Like, you look at the timeline of Prior's injuries/DL stints, and to walk away with the conclusion of "it was written in the stars that he would fall apart" is just bonkers. Nope, couldn't at all be a dude horsefeathers with his mechanics/approach to offset the issues from a serious injury that his team decided to treat like he just had to rub some dirt on it. IT WAS FATE.

The Cubs won the division by 1 game. Sit Prior more and 2003 (the greatest year of a lot of our baseball watching lives to that point) doesn't even happen.

Im sure so many of you wanted to see him restricted at the time. Dusty did what managers were tasked to do back then. Win at all costs.

Gee, it's almost as it would be better if teams were run by people smarter than the average meatball.

Mark Prior was better after the injury. From 7/11/2003 to the end of the season he had a 2.06 ERA and 2.35 FIP. So what horsefeathers timeline are you looking at?

So just how much did it really affect him? It didnt impact his mechanics, thats some horsefeathers. He struck out over 10/9 and less than 2 walks/9. He would have gotten through the 8th in G6 if not for stupid ass Gonzalez. He broke because pitchers break. Its hard for you guys to accept because they sold us that hes an unbreakable specimen.

  • April 25: Cubs at Colorado. The Cubs were up 7-1 after 6 innings, 8-1 after 7 innings, and 8-1 going into the bottom of the 8th. Prior not only pitched the 6th and 7th, he sent him out in the 8th, after having thrown 110 pitches, for one batter (which he walked). 116 pitches.
  • May 12: Cubs at Milwaukee. The Cubs were up 9-4 after 4 and 10-4 after 5. Prior, having not pitched particularly well, threw 6 innings. 124 pitches.
  • August 26: Cubs at St. Lous. Cubs were up 7-0 after 5, Prior gave up one run in 6th. He pitched 8 innings. 116 pitches.
  • September 1: Cubs v St Louis. Cubs scored 6 runs in the 5th and 1 in the 6th, won the game 7-0. Prior pitched 8 innings. 131 pitches.

This is solely focused on the 'win at all costs' idiocy, and doesn't even include things like his September pitch counts being 131, 129, 109, 124, 131, 133.

He missed over a month with shoulder stiffness after the Giles collision, as far as I can tell did zero rehab in the minors, Baker was generous enough to give him one limited start at 79 pitches....and then had him throw back to back complete games right after that.

Right. Like, what kind of nonsense is it to talk like, "we want our best pitcher to be able to pitch" and "gee, maybe the Cubs should have been a bit more careful whenever possible in the same season the guy horsefeathered up his shoulder in a bad collision" are incompatible ideas?

Or talking about the bullpen like it was impossible for the Cubs to do anything about it!

The dude had a 1.5 ERA after he came back. The Cubs handled it fine.

Yeah totally unique to Mark Prior. Only overused pitchers have arm and leg injuries.

Nobody said any of this was unique to Prior. And nobody has said this was only due to overuse.

I agree with Corey Patterson and Dillon Maples.

A few older ones on my list though would be Ty Griffin and Ced Landrum.  I remember as a young kid thinking Ty Griffin was going to be a superstar, based on nothing more than his Topps #1 Draft Pick baseball card.  Ced Landrum was like the poor man's Vince Coleman.  Small, speedy guy with no power, but he could run!

I found PSD in 2004. That was the first Cubs board I posted on.

I will never forgive those damn hackers that caused us to lose so much NSBB lore (including Tree's Nomar trade thread)
