Jim horsefeathers Frey too. He waited until game 5 to pitch Sutcliffe because he wanted to save him for the WS

That was the biggest killer to me, Sanderson should of never gotten a start that series.

Frey should of went with the kill in Game 4 with Sutcliffe and if that didn't go well he had Trout for Game 5, and the Padres did not hit lefties well that year and Trout was hot.

Between that PCA Players Tribune Article and Boyd breaking down in his press conference today....I know some of us have some reasonable criticisms regarding the corners of the infields, but man....what a generally likeable team. PCA rocks, Nico is so fun, you can tell how much this means to Happ, Shota is extremely cool, Palencia is sweet, Horton is amazing. Can be frustrating that there's maybe only one elite talent here, and he has the personality of a block of a wood, but the team put up 92. Sucks that it could be over in a couple days.

Palencia is sweet? Strange

I have had a kind of loathing of the Padres since 1984.....get it done Cubs!!!

If I ever randomly come across Steve Garvey I’m taking a swing at him.

I was only 3 in 1984 so I don't remember any details from watching baseball, I just know I did from what my parents told me. My daughter is 3 now and loves watching games with me so its only fitting that the Cubs get revenge from 1984.

Alcantara as the 14th hitter, no Wicks or Assad I think summarizes the parts that were up in the air.

Edit: No Amaya either, which I think was expected. Get him on the Schwarber plan.

Civale's been legitimately great out of the pen (unlike Flexen who was purely smoke and mirrors).  Curious if he's purely for a game that gets out of hand or if the team thinks he's got a chance to put up actual worthwhile innings.

Not surprised at 12 pitchers. I am surprised Rogers is one of them. Guess they wanted a lefty over Assad. It was apparent Assad wasn’t going to make it when he threw 80 pitches. But if they wanted him they could have had him just go 2 innings and he would have been fine for the WC round. Also, must not have liked what Hamilton was doing in Iowa so decided to just stick with Kevin as pinch runner who can hit a little, if needed. Ballesteros solid finish and some ability to play 1st base if they absolutely had to out him there made Santana a non option. Only real suspense to me would be Rogers. Hope they don’t use him.

Good to hear that about Civale. I can absolutely see him, Soroka and Rea pitch multiple meaningful, high leverage innings in this series. Not just mop up.

Yeah I would have labeled Rea as the mop up guy up until the last couple weeks, but if they truly just wanted one of those, they could have taken Wicks or Assad over Rogers. Just have to trust the infrastructure here (and hope luck goes our way).

I wouldn't be terribly upset to see them start Civale tomorrow as an opener for Shota so you can get some length out of him with only facing Tatis and Machado twice.

I'm excited but also I dunno the WC round still doesn't feel like the playoffs to me. It feels like we're playing in Dayton in the play in round, even if 2/3 of the playoff teams are also in the play in round.

Nope..

RCal was correct about the West getting home field in 1984 because they alternated back then.

If the Cubs had made the WS, the commissioner Bowie Kuhn had said that the Cubs would be able to play their games at WF during the day.

Was the 2 home then 3 in San Diego the normal configuration back then?

I believe so yeah, to cut back on travel.  The 1982 ALCS had 2 in Anaheim followed by 3 in Milwaukee.
