To be fair the Cubs and Mike Soroka, he had an MRI just before the TDL.

So while the Cubs may not have had a second MRI after this one, I guarantee they saw the data and had it made available to them. It seems like there was nothing popping on medical scans.

Agree, I think the Cubs did their due diligence.   But Hoyer went into the deadline needing a real SP piece for this team and he left with an oft-injured guy who had seen a recent significant velo drop with no idea why and no guarantees it would improve with only 2 months left in the season.

Every SP traded besides Kelly was basically a pile of arse and the prices were ridiculous so its hard to get mad at Jed but it still sucks.

If Boyd, Imanaga and Horton are all healthy they are fine with pitching. The problem is I don’t see all of them pitching in October. If they want Boyd and Horton to pitch then, they need less innings from them now. Basically conceding the division and settling for the WC.

Which is why we needed a real SP (or 2) at the trade deadline.  Jed blew it big time.

I think the prices were just too outrageous, in that regard it’s hard to blame Jed.

The number one thing he had to do was get a SP.  The last time Soroka was an effective SP was 2019 and he has a history of arm problems.  Bieber was out there if he wanted to take a gamble.

Despite being done for this season, I hope the Cubs make an offer to Soroka.  Once healthy he’ll be a nice addition.

What makes you think this? Also, when will he be healthy?

Bieber would have cost Wiggins. That was a conversation stopper. But high prices doesn’t absolve Jed. He should have known prices would be high. Rather than wait for the deadline he needed to add a pitcher in the off season. Pivetta comes to mind.

The Cubs have lost major innings to 4 of their starting 5 pitchers to start the year. Yeah, you always want to stockpile SPs, but its damn hard to plan ahead for 80% of your rotation either being out for the season or missing major time.

Looking for a silver lining or some kind of a return,, anything? Chances are this was a failed gamble by Jed and that’ll as far as it’s going to go.

They knew they were a man short in the off season. They chose to go with Rea instead of a better pitcher like Pivetta. I understand they couldn’t anticipate Steele going down. But I also do not think they planned on Horton having to pitch 100+ innings. A rotation of Steele, Pivetta, Imanaga, Taillon and Boyd would not have been them overstocking the rotation. It was what they should have done. Instead they saved $10M and signed Rea instead. And now they have to deal with him in the rotation. They obviously knew they needs more during the off season. That is why they considered Luzardo. So again, why not Pivetta and then they wouldn’t have to worry about adding a starter at the deadline. It was because TR wanted to pocket money.!

We really should have a seperate thread for those who want to talk about the Brewers. It is August 5th. We must we do this to each other?

Ho hum Brewers up 4-0 after 3 yawn

The Brewers’ Way:  no-mans-land dribbler, wild pitch, and Vaughn single.  4 runs.

You really need to ask that question?  We’re all Cub fans here.  Wallowing in misery is a thing. 😆

I’d suggest the “23” should stay on the field the rest of the year, but paint costs money that the Ricketts family probably don’t want to spend.
