I like this, but I'd take it a step further and say top 5.

It's time to cash in one of Caissie/Alcantara, full stop.

I'm about here with it as well. The Cubs need to convert some prospects into talent and the only way it happens is by really going out and getting a non-rental somewhere.

I know Cubs have had “let down” TDL’s in the past, but this is the first time under Jed we are true competitors, combined with the big swing this off-season landing Tucker, I don’t think Jed is going to miss this deadline. Now maybe if you have your heart set on a cost controlled SP, that might not come to fruition and some might consider that a failure. But I expect at the very minimum a Kelly type along with a RH bat

You'd think seeing what the other top NL playoff teams have done so far to improve their rosters, you'd think Hoyer would be a little more aggressive in getting who he wants now.

Sorry, but Soroka and Kittredge, although makes the pen better, doesn't quite push the needle for me.

Need to get that SP and another bat

I think where I'll be at it is this:

I think the 2025 Cubs will be fine if they finish with a RH bat and Kelly. At the same time, I will feel like a bit of a missed opportunity in that the Cubs probably do need to start converting some. So I'll be fine, but a little disappointed.

Yah, I dont think there's any chance the Cubs stand pat here. I think Jed has a price hes willing to pay for someone like Gore, and a couple back up plans. The question is how long does he wait before he moves to a backup.

lol oh god. please don’t let this deadline hinge on our unwillingness to move a bad-bodied positionless doubles hitter.

No. What that almost assuredly tells you is that internally, they believe in Ballesteros catching ability. And if they think he's a catcher, he's probably the best prospect in the system. If he's a DH, you can make arguments for Long as a similar type.

Guy has tons of power, but he also is over 31k% this year. I mean honestly right now I think of him as a Joey Gallo clone.

So unwilling to trade Shaw and now Ballesteros

If Hoyer unwilling to trade Ballesteros, then hes definitely unwilling to move Caissie Wiggins or Rojas.

So who is he thinking of getting as a SP if he is at all..

Nah. Bally is the sort of prospect who would be a hard pass for teams that value athleticism and defense. He should have a productive career, but his value plummets if you see him as a full time DH.

I'd also take these "X team would NEVER trade this prospect!" statements with a grain of salt.

Get Morton and Laureano and hold onto your top 5 for a big deal in the winter. Laureano can kick Happ out vs LHP and give us ridiculous OF defense at 2 spots. Morton has great postseason numbers at high volume and has been on the upswing.

Yep. If the Cubs really are clutching Ballesteros, it's probably because they value him more than others, likely because they believe in the defense.

But it could also be the kind of report where the Cubs are pretending it's a bigger deal for them to add him to a deal. When they're totally cool with eventually doing it.

Gallo clone would be an upgrade for me; Gallo could run and play defense.

This is quite the nonsensical leap in thought process.

4.98 ERA/5.01 xFIP since late June for Morton.  Basically as soon as people started noticing he wasn't quite cooked he went back in the oven.
