IMO the bat options remaining look something like this:

Willi Castro

<large gap>

Yoan Moncada

<small gap>

Luis Urias

Luis Rengifo

I know some names like Taylor Ward have been bandied about, but even as someone who has been stumping for not blocking Shaw even when he was in his deep slump, you need *some* added coverage at 3B.

I'm sure it'll be a fine move but I can't really get excited about a guy like Castro or Moncada when Suarez was available.  That would have made this offense unstoppable.

It seems like they will at least make a big pitching move though.

That is going to be pricy, but I'd be willing to bet this price is partially offset by a Cease deal in a few hours.

Not to call you specifically, but I really don't know what this means. Suarez is going to run hot and cold just like everyone else does. He's 3 for his last 29, in a full playoff series worth of games. Over the rest of the season will he hit better than Shaw? Almost certainly. But he certainly wouldn't have helped us in the Brewers (or Royals) series.

Yeowza to that return.

The one thing the Cubs don't have is a consensus Top 10 prospect. I've seen Caissie in the 20s in some publications and completely off some other Top 100s, but that's the one area where they might struggle to match certain teams.

Well the Cubs already have a top 3 offense in baseball and adding a guy that will hit over 45+ HRs - I think that makes a huge difference.  The only part of this offense that looks average at times is against LHP - Suarez would have made a big difference there.

I think Suarez helps a lot in the playoffs.  Like to me, there is a massive difference between Shaw getting 20-25 ABs in a playoff series against the Phillies or Dodgers vs Suarez taking those ABs.  And that can be the difference between a win and loss.  Hopefully Shaw has turned a corner with his recent success and it becomes a moot point.

Wouldn't mind the Cubs getting in on Suarez... Cease would be even better

I would be surprised if Hoyer wasn't in on those two. Either would be big additions.

If the Cubs trade Suzuki to get Cease I'll be horsefeathers livid

I'm not sure where you even got this idea.

So downgrade your SP to upgrade your closer and give away a top 3 prospect? Padres are out here making video game trades just for fun.

Olney: Suarez and Cease likely to be moved

Have a big feeling this is what Hoyer was waiting on.

Cease is the guy he wants with maybe Suarez and or a hitter involved
