If the top option available was a lefty would that be less attractive for you?  I saw Gore from the Nats mentioned in an article here recently.  No doubter to add a pitcher of his caliber with team control, but would it be an issue to have your top 3 starters entering a playoff series (Shota, Gore, Boyd) all being LHP?  For some matchups it might be an advantage but others it might be a death sentence.

Every NL playoff hopeful except Philly is worse vs. LHP than RHP, and Philly is very nearly flat.  So if anything a lefty would be a positive unless/until we got to the World Series (the AL is kinda the opposite where they all mash lefties).

I'm willing to take that chance

yeah I just edited my post to point that out.  It might actually be a great year to load up on lefties to get through the NL.

Possibly the 3 best teams in the AL (NYY, DET, HOU) seem to hit much better against LHP than RHP, but I'll gladly take that problem if it means we're in the World Series.

Horton has reverse splits, as does Taillon this year (but looks like an aberration), but something like a fixed, max effort Ben Brown waiting in the wings to shut down an all righty line up for a few innings would be a good add to that mix.

Don't know where all of this talk about Cassie being the asking price for Cabrera.  Marlins can ask but, they're not going to get a Cassie level prospect from the Cubs or anyone else for Cabrera.  Cabrera, while good, is an injury risk and he's never pitched more than 99 innings (he's currently at 80) whomever takes him on is taking quit a bit of risk as well.  Cabrera can definitely be had for someone other than Cassie or Wiggins.

Cabrera will absolutely cost a Cassie level prospect. He is under team control cheap until 2029. You can’t get a solid player with control who is cheap buffering 3 mid level prospects.

The injury risks and the fact he's never pitched more than 99 innings aren't factors?  Injury concerns sure played a role in Luzardo' possible acquisition.  Marlins didn't exactly get a big time package from the Phillies.

Matthew Boyd pitched less than 100 innings for 6 years prior to the Cubs signing him.

You seem pretty confident in this and it's extremely not true

Okay, in the majors and it's 99 and 2/3, so yes, given what's below I am fairly confident and it's extremely true.

You brought up his innings in the context of injury so majors or minors is pretty meaningless.

True but he's a lefty and as I just said about Wicks in another thread: LHP's get every last chance on earth to prove themselves. My god I saw former Cub Richard Lovelady with the Mets the other night and thus far he has an ERA north of 11. Same with Rob Zastryzny of the Brewers.....these guys have more than 9 lives

Boyd replaced in the all star game (by the mis kid from Milwaukee, which is dumb, whatever). Hoping that’s just a rest thing. Deep, deep trouble if not.

It's because he's pitching tomorrow

According to this ESPN piece, it's because Boyd is pitching tomorrow and  won't be available for Tuesday's all star game:

On the flip side, if the Diamondbacks sell, they are unlikely to trade both Gallen and Kelly, according to sources briefed on their plans. The DBacks already are without Corbin Burnes and Jordan Montgomery. If they subtract both Gallen and Kelly, they might not have enough young pitching to get through the season.

Gallen, trending upward in his last two starts, figures to draw more interest than Kelly. But Kelly, 36, has a 3.77 ERA in 159 career starts, all since he returned from Korea at age 30. And he’s only getting better. In his most recent start against the Padres, he threw four of the five hardest pitches of his career.

Some rumors from Nightengale -

Last two bullets if you can’t see:

• Orioles to make Zach Eflin available; Charlie Morton and Tomoyuki Sugano also expected to be traded barring dramatic winning streak
• Rays listening to offers for Taj Bradley
