They obviously don’t have another deal ready to go or it would be done. You don’t hard sell a guy you want who has a NTC. There is nothing going on until ST.

I dont see Hoyer as a "this is a guy we want no matter what type" and negotiate til it settled.

I definitely don't see him having multiple offers on the table at once.

He seems to me like a GM who if interested or gets a call, will make his offer and then just sit and waits til he gets a response back and see if they can work out an agreement with player A first before moving to player B, and i think it mainly because he has to make sure of the money part of the deal so he knows what he has available after each agreement.

If you are saying he makes one offer and then doesn’t talk to others and know about what it takes to make something else happen, I disagree. And I sure hope that isn’t the case.  I believe while Pressley is deciding he is talking to Robertson ,Stanek and others….. If he is also looking for an infield bat he is talking to guys like Moncada, Dejong, and others. Maybe even discussing a trade for that bat. Same with the outfield. He has to have an idea of cost of either Canhu, Bader, Grichik or Joe. Maybe even offer into any of those guys at any of those positions while he waits on Pressley. I do agree he has to balance the spending.(per ownership) But that cannot mean he doesn’t have several things going at once.

So how long is reasonable for a player to decide it he wants to stay where he is or if he is willing to play somewhere else? Pressley had to know he was being talked about in trades. He earned or negotiated the right to accept or deny a trade. But shouldn’t he know by now what he wants to do? Maybe being older and remembering when players didn’t have the rights they have now or weren’t paid anywhere near what guys are paid now makes me less patient with players of today. But as far as I am concerned Pressley is taking way too long to decide. If his family doesn’t want to move, stay. He earned that right. If he wants to close and maybe make more money on his next contract accept the trades. Either way has it merits. But make a fricken decision.

I get the impatience, I really do but Ryan and his wife, Kat, have two kids under the age of 3. That is a big factor. Part of me thinks if it was strcitly up to Ryan, he would accepted the trade. I also wonder if his wife is holding out hope that Texas Rangers would trade for Ryan instead, so that they would not have to move.

Either way, I think we'll get an answer by tomorrow at the latest.

This is what I'm thinking. And this is the reason players want the NTC. They have their family and personal lives to consider. I don't think he wants to drag this out but he's probably figuring out logistics before he says yes.

I get that. But I am sure the Astros made him aware he was being talked about in a trade. He had to know it was possible. I respect he negotiated the right to decide if he will accept a trade or not. And whatever he decides is fine. It is HIS decision. But not deciding is what is annoying. I’m not even suggesting the Cubs should put a time where they pull the deal. I am just strictly speaking about a player making a decision and how it shouldn’t take this long.

If Houston is also sending cash, it makes me slightly worried what we're sending in Houston's direction

I cant imagine much. If we assume at no-money it'd be a full salary dump, then if they're eating $5m, it's a player/prospect valued at very little...roughly half a win.

I certainly hope so

There you go, Rcal.

I figure the Cubs would give Ryan the weekend to decide.

👍spoke it into existence.

We haven't seen the financials on Kirby Yates yet right?

I suspect all of the old FA old closers come in the $12-15Mish range.  Pressly would IMO slot in slightly behind Yates and slightly ahead of Robertson/Jansen if he were a FA.  I'd guess the cash isn't more then $1-2M, and if it is it is basically acting to buy the player(s) going back.

I'd imagine the NTC lowers Pressly's value further though.

Thought I saw Yates got $13M per

I don't love giving Pressly a full NTC, but if that's what it took to get the deal done, that's fine.  I  suppose in the scenario where he is pitching well and the Cubs are inexplicably out of the race by the deadline, he would probably be willing to waive the NTC to go to a contender anyway.

Yep

FWIW (not much) I currently have Bello ranked as the #23 Cub prospect.  He was a low-A starter last year and  has a low 90s FB  with a lot of run and a good curve.   91/28 K/W in 89.2 IP with a 0.225 BAA and 5 HRA.

Great move. I know there were some red flags last year, but for this cost I love this move. Let’s Hodge mature into what will hopefully be our closer of the future.
