It's something i suppose. Still one starter to pencil in ahead of Taillon/Boyd and one 8th/9th inning pen arm and some kind of bench bet away from feeling ok about this offseason.

Catcher is currently the Cubs' worst position by a significant margin.  Looking at Fangraphs depth charts the Cubs are #24 right now.   This will, depending on exactly how you apportion playing time, bring them up to roughly average.  Cardinals at 13 and Rangers at 18 are all bunched up within half a win, and Kelly should bring the Cubs up into that tier.

Cardinals are about to take a massive hit. They are moving Contreras to 1B.

Kelly is fine I guess, depending on the terms. Not who I wanted but he's a good defensive catcher who can hit a little.

Somehow Amaya was worth 1.9 bWAR last year and the combination of Gomes, Nido and Bethancourt were worth -0.4.  If Kelly gives them the 0.7 he did for the 60 games in Detroit last year, that's a net 1.1 bWAR.  Seems like an important move to me for those who are less than excited about it.

Personally I was thinking 7. Not thrilled with the 2nd year Kelly got, but the AAV is good.
