A bye week is as good a time as any to list what far too early draft mocks have the Bears doing with their first round pick

1) Walter Football has the Bears taking Safety Malaki Starks saying

"Kevin Byard is just a temporary solution next to Jaquan Brisker at safety.

A quarterback in high school, Malaki Starks is a star in the making, according to Charlie Campbell’s sources."

2) CBS has the Bears taking Edge Mykel Williams saying

"Williams is too freakish for the Bears to pass here, and he'd be a nice building block opposite the similarly long and athletic Montez Sweat on an ascending Chicago defensive line."

3) Tankathon also has the Bears taking Edge Mykel Williams

4) Drafttek has the Bears taking DL Kenneth Grant

5) The Draft Network has the Bears taking RB Omarion Hampton saying

"The Bears went passing-game-heavy last offseason by drafting Caleb Williams and Rome Odunze and signing Keenan Allen. Now, they provide Williams some balance and draft him a running back. Omarion Hampton appears to be a back who can create for himself and be a true threat to create explosive plays out of the backfield. The addition of Hampton would make the Bears' offense even more dangerous."

6) Draft Countdown has the Bears taking Edge Mykel Williams

7) PFF has the Bears taking EDGE James Pearce JR. saying

"The Bears defense is one of the better units in the NFL, and their short-term outlook on that side of the ball is strong. However, they could still use another legitimate pass-rush threat opposite Montez Sweat. Pearce may be light at 6-foot-5, 240 pounds, but he generated an impressive 21.9% pass-rush win rate and earned a 91.9 pass-rush grade in 2023."

Outside of the RB, all of them are perfectly defensible. Just about every mock I've seen that has a 2nd round has the Bears using Carolina's 2nd for an interior lineman.

Starks is REALLY good. Byard has been much better than I expected this year and is under contract next year, so safety isn't a huge need. But both Byard and Brisker are free agents after 2025. Starks is probably too good to basically redshirt his first year. He can play some nickel as well, but you got Kyler there. This would be a BPA type pick and I wouldn't hate it even a little bit.

Williams is interesting as well. He's a typical Georgia prospect. Doesn't have gaudy numbers because he's been sharing time with a 5-star loaded DL. 4.5 sacks each of his 1st 2 years, 0 in 3 games so far this year. But he fits what I think the Bears want, much more than Pearce. The Bears already have a guy in Booker in the 240 range. Maybe Booker gets bigger, but I think ideally, the Bears want an Edge they can play on base downs, and at 265lbs with proven run D ability, Williams seems like more of a Bears pick. The Bears would have the ability to bring him along at his own pace with Sweat on the other side, along with having Demarcus Walker for another season.

Jordan Reid from espn has them taking Jonah Savaiinaea OL from Arizona

One of my favorite players in the draft. He's a big boy (6'6, 330) but can really move. Has played RT and RG primarily. I don't think Wright or Jones are going anywhere at tackle, so I'd play him at whatever guard position the free agent they certainly need to sign pre-draft, doesn't play. Was hoping he'd be a guy around at that Carolina pick, but he's playing too well this year to last that long. Especially when teams could want him for OG or OT.

How do we see the OLine shaking out with the returns of Bates and Borom? I don't see how you can continue to roster Davis, so I'm assuming he just gets cut after seeing some much better blocking/teamwork on the line in his absence. Pryor seems to be getting it done at RG. Does Bates jump Shelton or Pryor?

I guess we'll see if a real roster crunch happens, but I don't see them just cutting Davis outright.

Maybe you could shop him to a desperate team willing to give up like a conditional 2026 7th based on 2025 snaps (and pick up slightly more than his minimum salary for 2024)

I can’t imagine any team even considering taking him on. One completely wasted year, off to another awful start. The guy is done.

There's a real lack of quality OL. If the cost was basically minimum salary, maybe someone would bite.

Now that I'm looking at Davis's contract he does have per game bonuses. So there actually is minimal cost savings for Bears to cut him or make sure he's inactive each week.  If they did cut him, not sure if he has offset language if anyone did sign him.

Really crazy how bad he's been. Feels like whatever family issue he dealt with last year really made him lack desire to play.

It's football, I think it's safe to assume that more IRs are coming and will resolve any potential roster crunch.

11 DL seems a bit much.  You probably don't need all four of Booker, Taylor, Robinson and Hardy.  (Taylor has shown me basically nothing the last few weeks. Booker fills the exact same role but with a better motor).

I could maybe see them replacing Pryor with Bates.  Pryor has been pretty bad. He's slow and doesn't always get the same depth as the rest of the line which creates creases.  He's a beast in gap-blocking runs though.

I doubt you cut Davis before the end of the season because you'll need the depth no matter what. People get hurt, linemen especially get hurt. You could hold out some hope that maybe being benched fires him up a little bit, but I somehow doubt that. But one way or the other, I don't think a guy off the street will be better as a depth piece than him. (Unless he reacts so poorly to the benching that he refuses to play).

What's the draft looking like regarding Center? I expect (and hope) they are finally looking to find a good center to draft and anchor the line. That's been a huge missing piece. Find your Olin Kreutz you can keep there for the next 10-12 years.

Biggs speculated that Bates could take over for Shelton. But Shelton has actually been pretty good in the last 2-3 weeks.

I do think they cut Davis. He's already been healthy inactive once. He's behind Jenkins, Pryor, Murray (based on him getting reps over him Week 5 and active over him Week 6), and presumably Bates at guard.

I don't envision many scenarios where they just put him back in there and hope he's motivated. He's probably better than all those guys except Jenkins, but they clearly don't want to play him. Why keep him rostered?

I resisted starting the mock draft chatter last weekend. The Tankathon draft in particular had me excited with the positions drafted in each spot (I don't know the individual players well enough to prefer one over the other):

1/18 - DE Williams, Ohio St

2/35 - IOL Booker, Alabama

2/50 - DL Corleone, Cincinnati

3/82 - WR Anderson, Oklahoma (this was previously another IOL, I assumed more of a C - can't remember who)

Essentially the trenches on both sides. Agree that FA should be used to put us in BPA territory as either succession planning, instant training camp position battle, or just depth.

If we went DE, G, DT, C I'd be perfectly happy with that provided the value was right.

I’ll always hold some affection for Jay. The fact he was an A-hole always kinda added to my affection for him. Too bad to see him like this.

I'm so excited for the rest of the season and this bye sets them up really nicely to work out the OL issues and frankly I am hoping Caleb and DJ have been holed up together throwing bomb after bomb. If we can get deep ball consistency out of Caleb it's gonna be a really special offense. They need to get on the same page (and DJ has to get more comfortable in the offense as you can see he seems to be thinking too much and doesn't look as explosive when running routes) and we need to feature Odunze more. His nose should be in the book all week, no more rookie flubs and not knowing where he lines up on each play.

We have a bye, WAS doesn't. They could suffer significant injury, they're at least gonna get beat up some, while our guys get to heal. That is offset by being on the road some but it feels like a nice advantage for us. We are pretty healthy as it is, especially on offense, and we're going to be in really good shape coming off the bye.

Work out the OL issues and get 2023 DJ back and this team will be able to hang with any team they face. I'm predicting a win and a long win streak. Last year we almost beat the Lions twice, I believe we will hammer Darnold, and we are due to kick the horsefeathers out of the Packers. We will go at least 3-3 vs the division. The Niners will probably whip us, though.

11-6 or 12-5 at the end.

I stopped liking Cutler when I found out he was full blown MAGA.

When I heard he was arrested, I thought to myself "I bet he utilized any relevant slurs against the police during his arrest." But I didn't understand why I thought that.

Finding out he's MAGA explained it.
