How we feeling about a Jenkins extension?

I know it's a copout but my answer is "depends on the price.". If he's dead set on testing free agency and we have to pay him top dollar, then I'm fine letting him walk.  But I'd be fine paying him starting guard money for three years.

It's not that I'm enamored with him, but if we don't, then we are just going to have to give the same money to a free agent guard that costs about the same and has just as many warts.

find someone else who can pancake 2  DL/LB's on a single play and stay healty and I'm fine letting him walk

otherwise, I want a deal that is reasonable

I know the need for an upgrade on the OL, I think if Crosby is truly available, the Bears must prioritize getting him.

Are you ok with giving up multiple 1st round picks?

Far from being a cop-out, I think you nailed it.

Especially when, as I suspect, Poles would structure the contract with a relatively small third year cap hit if Jenkins was cut after two years.

Thought I had today:

Does Caleb get more control of the offense because Flus is a defensive guy? Like would Matt Nagy be giving him this type of freedom to make calls at the line? Or would he be more intent on showing he's the reason the offense is good?

There's a few sticklers who don't like line checks, but mostly this is what all NFL offenses are supposed to be doing.

I think I would offer him something like the Nate Davis deal, ratcheted up for a couple years of inflation. Something like 3/30 with a chance to make a little more? That is something like top 20 G money, which I think is as highly as anyone would considered him to be. Not sure where we think that lands on Big Tev

I disagree. Would likely take at least 1 first round pick, if not 2 similar to the Mack trade. He has a big contract and the Bears, for a change, actually have players they probably want to re-sign in the future.

I'd love a bookend DE, but I'd prefer to spend money on offense wherever possible.

IDK if it's because Nagy is a control freak with his offense or that Nagy is stupid and bad at his job, but I'd guess Caleb wouldn't have as much freedom.

Yes.  This organization needs to stop allocating the majority of the resources to that side of the ball.  The *idea* of Crosby is a lot of fun, but the formula needs to be loading up on offense and competency to above avg on defense (which, well, it's already there, TBH...not that I don't want to continue to add to the defense - just not a dude who demands that much of your resources),

My initial inclination was to say no, just because of the availability issues, but when you put it the way you put it in that final sentence, yeah, I guess so.  That's about right.

I am hoping we can snag 1-2 solid OL in FA so we can head into the draft in a position of really being able to draft BPA and not feeling inclined to reach on an OL if you can do better.

Teven's going to be a tough call. The guard FA market has fallen into tiers. The top tier guys get 20M per. Then there is a 16-18M market. Then a 10-13M market, which kinda has a bunch of guys that are lesser (but healthier) players than Jenkins.

Scheduled to be FAs after this year is 1 top tier guy (Trey Smith, KC) who is likely to break the 20M barrier, dare I say easily? Then there's a couple old guys Zach Martin and Kevin Zeitler, who I'd have 0 interest in. Then there's old friend, James Daniels...which isn't happening. That just leaves Teven and Aaron Banks (SF). Teven is slightly younger and familiar with the offense.

The question becomes does Jenkins value himself in the 16-18M range or 10-13 Mil range. I don't think 3/30 gets it done. Maybe 3-40 does though. But he may be a guy you let test the market and pivot back to if he's not getting the offers he wants. I don't see him taking a 1-year deal with his injury history.

3/40 or up to 3/40+ through playing time seems reasonable. Davis got 3/30, so I was thinking like 3/36. I kind of wrote it backwards, tho

Someone might pay him 3/48 or more, but getting him in season like this should knock off the extra FA premium, I'd hope

I'm not interested in paying the price it would take, but I understand the impulse to go after Crosby or Garrett.

DE2 is by far the weakest part of the defense.  I'm really not crazy about Darrell Taylor. He lines up extremely wide, forces the offense to respect his speed rush around the edge, they respect it and that is the end of his impact on the play.

Booker I like a little more, but he's not a starting DE on an elite defense.  The main thing I like is his motor, he plays hard and chases down plays until the whistle.

The record for 120+ passer rating games by a rookie QB is held by Dak Prescott, with 5.

Williams' 2 already ranks him 10th

If Teven can go the rest of the season without any other injury concerns, I'd probably offer him a 3/40 type deal. You're gonna overpay in FA no matter what, and he's an in house guy, you keep one of the players together for chemistry and team morale. I'm more concerned about his health than his play really.

I'll also continuously draft linemen at the rate that Poles seems to like drafting DBs. Just keep the barn stocked with linemen. We're in a strange spot where we aren't desperate for skill position players, though I imagine we'll be needing a replacement for Keenan after this season. Get a stud Center in the draft, if you can. Keep looking into Guards and Tackles. You can probably upgrade from Braxton. You're always gonna want guys.
