17. Cubs: Tyler Bremner, RHP, UC Santa Barbara (No. 14)

This keeps being a landing spot for Bremner, who did not get the chance to show what he can do in postseason play. I still think he could float higher after finishing the year with double-digit strikeouts in six of his last seven starts.

Ike Irish went 18, Daniel Pierce 20, Wehiwa Aloy 23 and Ethan Conrad 26.

I'm still formulating my draft rankings and learning more about certain draft prospects, but I think the Cubs are taking a proven college talent just like in previous years. That strategy has worked out pretty well, and I think the draft model they use tends to push these advanced hitters higher up in their internal rankings.

I don't think Wehiwa Aloy makes it to the Cubs' pick at 17 (I would be happy if he was still available). I think we should be monitoring Gavin Kilen, Marek Houston, and Brendan Summerhill. Maybe Andrew Fischer if the Cubs think he has a possibility of being average defensively at 3B (I don't think he will be and many scouts doubt it). Probably ends up being just a 1B prospect, but he has a good stroke and power. Reminds me of Michael Busch in college.

I have a little first hand thoughts and info on Andrew Fischer. First of all, he absolutely can not play 3B. He’s really bad there. Unplayable even in college. He’s strictly a 1B/DH. The kid can hit, don’t get me wrong.

As some know, I went to Ole Miss. I’m a baseball season ticket holder there and know some people inside the program. Andrew Fischer transferred to Ole Miss for last season before transferring again to TN for this season. I was told throughout the season last year that Andrew was a locker room problem. Many of the players flat out didn’t like him for various reasons. Then after the season he agreed to a new deal to return to Ole Miss for what would have been this season. He even made a post saying he was returning and he had signed a new deal (NIL). On the last day of the portal being open, he jetted off to Knoxville out of nowhere without anybody knowing this was even a possibility. Left Ole Miss without its big middle of the order bat and no time to even replace him. That guy rubs me the wrong way with everything that happened within his year in Oxford. I know it’s personal for me and it doesn’t matter to most people, but I think anybody should be skeptical of getting a personality like that in your locker room. His on the field “antics” at Tennessee are incredibly out of hand also. He’s found himself in the news regularly there as well for just acting like a child.

I also have opinions on Liam Doyle as well. I’ll hold off. Yall probably don’t care and only mentioning because of the draft and it’s like the one minuscule bit of info I can provide lol. Let’s just say Liam is basically a carbon copy of Andrew.

17. CHICAGO CUBS - TYLER BREMNER, RHP, UC-SANTA BARBARA

Mostly arms here with Chicago. The next group of college arms would be led by Bremner and followed by Riley Quick (Alabama), Zach Root (Arkansas) and Patrick Forbes (Louisville) on the college side; and Kruz Schoolcraft (Sunset, OR) and Jack Bauer (Lincoln-Way East, IL).

Bremner was among the top prospects at the start of the spring who had a "down performance" over the spring, though it really wasn't all that bad and most scouts attribute to poor defense behind him and death by a thousand cuts (or singles) where he had a .215 BAA and .104 ISOa while still striking out 13 per nine with a 5.8 K/BB ratio. Bremner also has teams exploring him above this.

Bauer is a hot topic local(ish) prep arm who was up to 102 this spring about 40 miles from Wrigley, a very rare feat for any arm let alone a high school lefty. His range is more comp round territory, while Schoolcraft jumps ahead with suitors in the teens.

A little uncertainty on my end, but I'd lean Bremner, then Forbes, then Schoolcraft, then college bats. I haven't heard much about prep position players here.

Hot names for Cubs pick No. 56 are Southern California prep arm Angel Cervantes and Las Vegas prep shortstop Tate Southisene (Cubs selected his brother, Ty, in 4th round last year)

17. Cubs — Andrew Fischer, 1B, Tennessee

Plenty of people are linking Tyler Bremner to the Cubs, but I don’t think he gets this far on draft day. The Cubs haven’t taken a high school player in the first round since Ed Howard in 2020, and I’ve heard a lot more college names tied to them this spring—though all of the top high school shortstops still on the board make sense here on talent.

Fischer has a limited defensive profile, but is his bat really going to fall into the late 20s on draft day? He makes a lot of contact, has great power and excellent plate discipline. This doesn’t feel like a profile that slides.

College 1B in a bad college bat year seems silly.

Anything can happen in the MLB Draft, but that seems unlikely.

For those who have access, any notables among the guys who were available?

Amongst guys linked to the Cubs so far, Gage Wood went 21, Daniel Pierce 23, Riley Quick 34, Anthony Eyanson 38, Patrick Forbes 40.

Bremner, Killen and Aloy went consecutively with the 3 picks before the Cubs.

17. Chicago Cubs

Steele Hall, SS — Hewitt-Trussville (Al.)
HOMETOWN: Trussville, Alabama
HEIGHT: 5-11
WEIGHT: 182
BAT/THROW: R-R

The Cubs love tools and they love athletes and in this case, they get arguably the most exciting player in the Draft. An 80-grade runner with an ever-evolving bat, Hall has a chance to turn into something resembling Trea Turner as he continues to mature. Pierce is also well-liked in this spot, as is prep shortstop Ryan Mitchell.

Kind of a surprise pick with Kyson Witherspoon, Tyler Bremner and Daniel Pierce all available.

Hall is the top HS player in Alabama. He's a Tennessee commit. He's right in their mold of player. Around 6 feet tall, athletic, middle of the diamond. If he were a college kid, he'd check off all the boxes.

Yes please. I would not bet on his talent getting to us but he'd be a major addition. Feels like he will hit for more power than expected. From a WAR perspective, he appears to have a high floor and ceiling with the 80 spd and solid defense.

He’s a right-handed hitter with a spread base, high-hands, and the back elbow up. He uses a simple leg lift trigger with a good move to get the hands deep and create separation. It’s a low-tension operation. Compact stroke with feel to get the barrel out front. It’s a very in-sync operation with some length through the hitting zone & feel to create some whip.

Tools

Hall has a smooth right-handed stroke, as detailed above, and the bat-to-ball skills reign supreme in this profile. He’s consistently on the barrel and finds ways to do damage and produce on the circuit. There’s a ton of bat-to-ball skills, with Hall being able to drive the ball to all fields, and it’s an advanced approach. He’s exceptionally athletic and produces plus-run times consistently, being someone who ranges well on the infield as well. He’s got the tools to stick at shortstop at the next level.

With Pierce? Maybe, But I think Hall ticks most of the Cubs boxes. I've been beating down his door for a bit, but I'd handicap him and Pierce as the two hitters who tick off the most this year.

I'm just reading scouting reports here but I'd prefer the guy who has a better hit tool since they can both play good shortstop. I'm not as intrigued by elite speed being the top tool.

Not a big deal - they're both great athletes and first round prep shortstops have done pretty well in this part of the draft the last few years so either of them seem like a wise pick.

I would find it hard to pass on Witherspoon who is generally valued higher than both Hall and Pierce and feels like a great fit for the Cubs player development and Tyler Zombro.

Keith Law has the Cubs taking Gavin Kilen in his mock draft this AM.

The writeup makes it sound more like speculation based on fit and type (he has some Matt Shaw vibes) than anything sourced.

I was just reading about AJ Russell at Tennessee, and he basically sounds like a carbon copy of the Jaxon Wiggins situation.  He'd be a really fun get at 56.

I'm all about pitching this draft though.  Give me Witherspoon/Bremner/Quick at 17.  Then at 56 take a swing at another frontline pitcher, even if you have to swallow some risk.  Russell is probably my favorite, but Forbes or Wood out of college or of course a HS pitcher would fit the bill too.

One thing to take into account with our 1-1 pick at #17 is to look back at recent classes and not necessarily just the 1-1 pick. I say this because the Cubs seem to have a holistic, "draft class" approach yearly under Kantrvotitz. Horton, while I'm sure the Cubs really liked him (he had ties to Nichols back to the Howard scouting days) was in large part a pick to ensure Ferris came in as well. That entire draft class was about pitching. Last year saw a draft class that focused on a lot more power than we've seen.

With that, I think trying to figure out the "theme" of the year, or the holistic approach taken will help us ultimately understand the 1-1 pick. I'm interested to see what the 2025 theme is.

17. Cubs: Wehiwa Aloy, SS, Arkansas (No. 22)

The Cubs are tied mostly to college position players such as Summerhill, Aloy and Kilen. Bremner and Pierce are alternatives from other demographics.

Callis this evening

Despite being a big fan of his namesake I'm not super excited for Aloy

I like Bodine, but this might say more about college umps than his framing abilities lol. As somebody who watches a ton of college baseball, to say the umpiring is horrific would be an understatement

I'm never big on grabbing guys with significant swing and miss issues unless they take lots of walks and have absolutely prodigious power too. Maybe if Aloy could stick at SS, but everything I've read made it sound like 2B is inevitable. Kilen just sounds so much like a guy the Cubs would value to me.
