This is actually all about the cap.  Towns is being paid like a top 10 player but isn't quite that.  The rest of the Knicks cap situation looks better than the Timberwolves.  So they had the luxury to add KAT's salary, while the Timberwolves badly needed some salary relief and flexibility.

Looking over the Bulls roster is pretty cringe-worthy. They are basically looking at starting Coby, Zach, Williams and Vuc, with some combination of Giddey and Lonzo Ball at the point. They have Jalen Smith listed as the back up C and Torrey Craig as the backup PF. Yikes. It's a worse roster than last year and they didn't make the playoffs. Absolutely no one to grab rebounds. That's not good for a pretty poor shooting team.

Pretty insane that teams with those records faced off.
