Unless their plan is to keep Fields and move #1, which I hope it is not, then Poles has really blown this entire situation with his indecision. Can Chicago please get one GM who isn't afraid of his own shadow in FA?

it's more likely that nobody wants fields and the offers just aren't there

I seriously doubt this boils down to Poles indecision. I just don't think anyone felt Fields was the guy to move them forward. He's cheap for one year, but he's not after that. It might just be that he was never going to be more than a backup somewhere wherever he ends up.

What if Poles never actually wanted to trade Fields and he prefers to trade the #1 pick?

Then we probably need a new GM

I believe that's the case as well. Think the Bears would ever consider a position change for Fields?  Honestly, I think he'd do well at WR.

Or maybe Poles sucks at negotiations and everyone is outmaneuvering him.

What if Poles doesn't want the Williams circus and likes Maye more, and did want to trade Fields and the first pick, but would be fine with Fields being the bridge to Maye? Still plenty of possibilities. Hell, Poles may not know what he wants. He still needs a meeting with the top pick to get inside his head.

For the life of me I will never understand the “can’t have Fields in the clubhouse” argument. He’s under contract for one year. Hes a good guy/teammate He’s proven over and over he’s not THE guy. But he’s capable of winning a game or two. If Williams is any good he’ll win the job in the summer and it’ll be obvious he should be the starter. If Williams gets injured then fields starts. If Fields goes on a tear, great! If he fuddles along like he’s done so far in his caeeer, so be it.

there is not going to be a clubhouse split about who should start. If Williams starts and is bad enough that people will be clamoring for Fields, that situation is not any better with Fields in another uniform.

ideally, somebody else gets hurt in September and Fields is sitting there as a guy they’d be willing to trade a 2nd for.

But they should not trade him today for a 6th just because they are afraid of him being in the locker room with Williams.

We can’t possibly know, but that’s a strange conclusion to come to when Poles is the guy who utterly fleeced the Panthers last year.

The signs point mostly to the rest of the league being uninterested in Fields as a starter. This should tell us something.

Darnold to Vikings is done. Which is certainly... a choice by them. Presumably they hope to draft someone and he's their Glennon.

I believe Denver is the only team without a QB1

They're totally trying to trade up for JJ.  If they can't land him, or even if they can, Darnold is the type of Bridge investment they need.

Denver... Who knows. Maybe also trying to trade up or Payton will bail out Saints and trade for Taysom Hill lol

That type of attitude is nearly pure platitude at this point.  Any further interactions are basically formal job interviews.  You're more likely to overreact to something small and meaningless than gain valuable new insights cuz you had a day long meeting.

If that's his plan I think his comments mean practically nothing.

You don't publicly talk about your hope to trade him by free agency if you plan to keep him.  We have a blueprint for how poles acts when he is keeping fields and trading the pick: literally last year.

There's also the report that the new offensive coordinator hasn't worked with fields in any capacity so far

While there's some similarities to last year obviously, a lot of the circumstances are different.  We've gotten pretty used to Poles being pretty honest, and I actually do think he is, but if he wants to keep Fields and move off 1 maybe he's being purposely elusive or misleading now and treating it differently than last year where a great deal materialized early.  The "CW good deal" is gonna be bigger than the Bryce deal, so there's no guarantee it would materialize on some timeline.

Hopefully this is pointless and Poles is using pick #1 on QB, but if he's trading it, the real mismanagement isn't some combine quotes.

Then he's handled it incredibly poorly with his comments.

Would not be the first time a GM handled a situation poorly.

I still believe Williams will be a Bear but I now can see a scenario in which Fields is also a Bear.

actually, Poles fleecing the Panthers last year may be THE reason other teams are low-balling Poles this year. The Panthers trade looks horrendous and no one wants to go down that path and get suckered by trading for either Fields or the #1 and simply overpaying. They are playing the waiting game with Poles, hoping he caves and gives up Fields for far less

I don't think most of these teams are signing day 1 FA QBs and holding out that they might goad Poles into a better deal.  They're most likely moving on. Maybe NE and Minny could be in play (at least one of them likely drafts a QB though - maybe both do).

Think the other suitors who were purposely the stronger ones have moved on.
