My expectations this off-season are now sky high

Wait to see how they do in FA. He can't make this team win in it's current state.

why do people keep acting like the cubs were bad last year?

Ok so, Counsell is obviously a big upgrade strategically.  But he's also a massive step up in "punchable face-ness" too.

We will never know, but I think he gets the 2023 comfortably to the playoffs.

That latter no longer concerns me as much as the former.

I mean....Counsel turned down the Mets and David Stearns.  I don't think Counsel chose to sign with the Cubs because Jed said he's standing pat with the current team.

Well, I will say this...he just got 5/$40m from the Cubs. That's the biggest contract ever given to a manager in the history of the MLB. The Cubs could have probably told him to wear a pretty pink skirt and start Justin Steele at SS and he'd probably have taken the contract.

I agree, I think the Cubs are going for it, though.

They Reteria-d Ross.  Wow.

Exactly my thought. It was the right move then and it’s the right move now!

I think the Mets could have matched that.  The Astros need a new manager, do the Dodgers really love Dave Roberts? The Cubs came out of nowhere, there are probably other suitors we don't know about.  I think the Cubs had to make a pretty compelling sales pitch to get Counsel.

The Cubs are close enough that he probably doesn't need to move.  I'm sure that was a factor, in addition to the big time salary of course.

Shocking move to start the offseason . I think Ross is pretty bad as a manager but didn’t think Hoyer would have the balls to replace him this offseason . Counsel is one of the best if not the best manager in baseball .

Great move by the Cubs . In terms of what this means for this offseason and going all in ? Hard to tell . After all Counsel is getting a record deal for a manager .Cubs will go over the LT for sure but how much above it it’s the big question .

They're a lot worse without their best hitter from last year.

What makes his face a step up in punchable face-ness?

I secretly wanted this to happen and didn’t think they’d do it, no matter what happens next Jed has my respect forever that they are doing everything possible to improve the team

Bc we didn’t make the playoffs

I doubt it. I think this is a situation of opportunity. They didn't even ask the Brewers to interview him (instead waiting until he was officially a FA), and it doesn't seem like they had been conducting a widespread interview process. This feels very closed doors and very opportunistic. They had the chance for the man who is regarded as perhaps the best in the league at what he does, and they made the change.

If not for Counsell I suspect Ross would have been kept no issues.
