Cubs definitely out-Brewered the Brewers this series.

...

From the "not all blown saves are created equal " stat crew, Alzolays performance today snapped his consecutive save streak at 18.

I've been banging that drum for awhile though I questioned it a bit at times.  I think there's value to Hendricks in the clubhouse too and working with the other pitchers.  I don't want to pick it up if its going to make it difficult to sign Belli or another high profile FA, but there's definitely worse things you can spend $16 million on.

I'm curious what his value actually is on the open market.  Could they decline the option and then bring him back for something like 2/18 or 2/20 instead and save a few million next year?

What a series.

With the Brewers playing the Phillies next, if the Cubs can take care of business against the Reds, they will be in really good shape and will be breathing right down the neck of one of either the Brewers or Phillies.

Worst case scenario is probably Brewers winning 2 of 3 right? At least if the Brewers sweep, it helps us in terms of playing the WC round at home. Obviously we want the division so Philly winning the series is ideal.

Just want to say that it makes me irrationally happy seeing Kyle f'ing Hendricks, 2016 Game 7 starter still pitching and winning big games for the Cubs in 2023 with literally every other player from that team long gone.

Edit: I realize he didnt get the win today but he's a huge reason we won.

Jeimer Candelario was on the 2016 team. He wasn't around much -- it was only for a week around the 4th of July. But he was technically on the team.

Speaking of Candelario - 2 for 25 slump with no walks during that stretch.  Of course similar to Morel one of his hits was pretty big, but gotta get him going again

Yeah I think picking up the Hendricks option is the best choice now. Maybe decline the club option and tack on an extra year at a lower AAV

To take who spot ??

Aren't we hoping for Steele, Wicks, Assad,  (stuck with Taillon) and adding another TOR type starter ?

Edit Also Stroman if he picks up his option

Great that Hendricks pitching well lately but isn't it time to move on from him now?

He'll be 34 next season

It's pitching. If you aren't running 8 deep in the rotation heading into spring, you don't have enough.

Don't disagree but again,  isn't it time to move on from Hendricks after this season over paying him 16 mil for depth?

I forgot Stroman if he picks up his option

Let’s see where Wicks is at by the end of the year. I know we’re all hopeful but it’s been one start in the majors.

Wicks has never thrown 100 innings in a full season. Assad has topped out at 116 (in 2019) threw 108 last year and is at 79 this year. There’s no way those two guys are pitching a full season as starters next year.

If Kyle keeps this up for another month you 100% pick up that option.

The problem I have with Hendricks is that as he's already demonstrated that there isn't a floor to his production, if the command isn't quite on point or he loses enough movement/velo due to age, then you're getting this year's Taillon in terms of output and salary.  I'm also concerned that this year is a dead cat bounce partially *because* of his injury, where he hasn't had to try to go a full season and has more in the tank in terms of being able to repeat his delivery and have plus command.  Next year(especially if he makes any postseason starts) that's not a luxury he'll have, and that 16 million represents a sizeable chunk of what the team will have to work with to upgrade the roster.

$16 million would make him the 30th highest paid pitcher in baseball this year.  His fWAR in 64th in baseball (for pitchers) this year at 1.8.  However prorated over 26 starts (starting pitchers who have made every start this season are around 28 starts), he would be at 2.6 wins which is.......30th in baseball.

I'm sure there's a much more intelligent way to determine his value relative to what other pitchers are getting paid, but that's what I pulled up.

I agree with Hairyducked Idiot about the depth, also Ohtani wouldn't be pitching next year if he's the big addition also think Yamamoto would be pitching every 6 days so there would be need for another starter. Idk about their interest in any of the other top arms.

All fair points.  If I better understood where the Cubs were in salary obligations for 2024 and how adding $16m for Hendricks would affect that I might have a different opinion.  I do think the Cubs will go over the tax next year but not sure how much.  If they don't pick up Hendricks' option they'll likely have to find another starter in FA.  They may not have to shop in the $16mil a year market for that starter but if they did, they might end up with a better pitcher, or they may end up with Taillon part 2 for the next 4-5 years instead of a 1 year commitment from Hendricks.

I do like the thought of Hendricks possibly working something out for a 2 year deal that will give him less AAV but allow him to stay in Chicago where he seems very comfortable.  I'd consider Hendricks at 2/$24 or something like that
