Feels like Velus to PS has to happen (though they have announced initial practice squad). I don't think there's any risk he's picked up by anyone and there's no space for him on the 53.

If a guy is on the practice squad is he allowed to just catch balls off the JUGGS machine all day every day?

Disappointed to see Lewis get cut, he was probably the 2nd best pure pass rusher on the team.

I don't get why Dominique Robinson is still on the squad. He has shown basically no improvement so far.

He was a draft pick by this regime. And it seems they gave preference to the guys they drafted and/or paid more highly this offseason.

Robinson & Green over Lewis & Gipson

Dylan Cole (who barely practiced/played) over Micah Baskerville

EQ & Velus over Daurice Fountain

I mean most of these are depth positions, so it's not a big deal. but it does seem like they may have kept lesser players (in my eyes) for "fit" reasons.

Worth noting, the Bears' Week 5 game is on TNF. It's probably unlikely the Bears bring back Teven Jenkins in a short week. So we may not see him until mid October.

But it won’t be a short week for him, and will be a short week for other linemen that will be banged up after four games. If he’s healthy there’s no reason not to bring him back.

Is Darnell Wright good to go for week 1. Have not seen much on his status recently

From what I saw, everyone but Teven Jenkins is ready to go for week 1.

I have never been less sure of what to expect from a Bears season.  There's almost no outcome that would shock me.

My natural tendency to doom boner says that snap processing is the most important skill a QB can have and it's not something that can be fixed if Fields' brain doesn't have it, and that last preseason film breakdown sure looked familiar.  The offensive line is looking shaky and is still too enamored with run-blocking. We have no idea if Poles' approach to building a defense works, and who cares if it does because it's defense and doesn't matter.  I could easily envision a collapse on par with last season.

But Fields is also insanely talented and hard-working and has some legit weapons surrounding him.  I genuinely would not be shocked if all the preseason MVP hype came true and he led the team to 12+ wins.

I really, really want to see how this plays out.   The only thing I don't want to see is a tepid result where Fields doesn't play bad enough to lose the job but not nearly good enough to feel secure in him.

That's probably the least likely outcome unless they continue to game plan 3 yards and a cloud of dust. I have much more confidence in Fields' ability than I do in Poles and Fluss.

Yeah.

Fields managed to lead them to 30 points a week for a good stretch there (and against some good defenses) while he still had (pretty much only) Mooney around. Now he's got DJ Moore, Mooney, Claypool, an upgraded OL, and a better RB room, and is in his second year in the system. They might be a lot better than we are even allowing ourselves to think on offense. I don't really give a single horsefeathers what happened in the preseason.

Of course, the OL could still be a disaster, or more injuries might pile up.

I have a hard time seeing Fields being a disaster, though.  He might just not be great, but I think he's pretty clearly at least a start-able NFL QB (for however long he's healthy).  The running ability and the way it affects defenses really raises his floor.

What preseason MVP hype? I’ve seen zero.

Orlovsky kinda said it.  Greenberg kinda said it.  You can decide whether that's a good or bad thing lol.

I saw Trubisky lead an offense to 30 ppg for a month and a half stretch once, too.

Fields' five-game run a) came when they switched up the offense, so defenses didn't have film on it right away.  b) was something they were reluctant to do earlier in the season because it can lead to QBs getting hurt and it did lead to him getting hurt and c) was bookended by equally long stretches of bad offense on both sides.

I find it very easy to envision a version of fields that isn't a startable NFL QB. It's the version we've seen most of his career to date.

I'm not going to even bother putting in the effort to point out why that's a terrible comparison, but it's a terrible comparison.

I think lowkey, the OL looked pretty good pass blocking in preseason, with Davis getting 0 snaps and Wright/Jenkins missing last week. Guys like Borom, Kramer and Carter looked really good, IMO. (Braxton was solid too).

From the sound of things in camp, it seems like Fields and DJ are further along than the rest of the offense. Flus seemed to blame a lot of protection and receivers in practice. And by all accounts, Fields looks much more comfortable in most areas.

I would imagine still, the offense will likely get off to a slow start. Getting guys together on the OL for the 1st time, getting Claypool back up to speed may take a bit. I'm hoping, like last year, we really see the offense take a big step after the early TNF mini-bye week.

Cool.  I wouldn't have valued the effort anyway, so we both win

Bears are -1 vs GB next Sunday.  When the line opened in the spring they were -3. Would not surprise me to see GB the favorite by kickoff.
