I love that people at the winter meetings basically have no idea what's going on with Ohtani, but a popular answer for where he's going recently has been back with the Angels.

Yeah, of all the places where Ohtani ends up, I just have an impossible time thinking the Angels will be that team. Maybe he will! But damn, that'd certainly be a choice.

It would honestly be about as bad a decision as possible for baseball.

The premise of some of these writers is Ohtani likes California. That's all they got.

Latest article from Feisand at mlb.com doesn’t even mention the Cubs on Ohtani .

Dodgers / Angels / Blue Jays were the only mentions .

Having the Angels on these lists fills me with confidence that no one knows what is happening. I believe they are only on these national reporters lists because Ohtani played for them and not because they are a realistic option.

I would love to see Ohtani go back to the Angels. Dodgers would be soooooo pissed off that they got spurned by Ohtani, twice.

I believe comfort and ease of transition are factors. Orange County is also pretty freaking gorgeous and California is massive and a blast to explore. You pretty much have every activity you could ever want to engage in right around the corner.

They also convinced Mike Trout to extend despite the roster and organizational outlook.

Dodgers are just down the road 😛

I personally can’t see it after years of being very good but playing for a very bad team. I guess anything is possible however.

maybe he doesn't value winning as much as everyone assumes, who knows. the angels are a long shot, but it wouldn't really shock me. it would just be boring as hell

If I were a young multi-millionaire athlete there is no place I'd rather spend most of my time than southern California. Hell, if I were an old rich guy, same thing. The only part that I would have a hard time with is traffic.

With that said, how much in-season free time at home do active players really get?  These guys make enough money that they can do whatever and visit wherever they want in the offseason, regardless of where they play baseball.

Ryan Klesco signed to play in SD so he could spend most of his time surfing.

Imagine thinking that Bob Nightengale's opinion should be valued on anything, let alone the most secretive FA pursuit in sports history.

he sucks, but this kind of sounds like it's coming from a cubs source?

Well I don't think any of us actually felt deep down that the Cubs would get him.  I had hope but never really expected it.  Onto the next one...

* I realize Boob is often wrong so this too could be wrong.  If he's right those are my thoughts

And we think that high-level Cubs sources are inexplicably sharing information with Bob Nightengale?

I'm a bit skeptical on where it's coming from. Maybe that's just personal hope, but I have a hard time thinking the Cubs inner circle would leak that to Bob. Seems kind of...odd, no? The Cubs are pretty good about keeping this stuff locked up and quiet. So I really don't know how this could have gotten out.

it's probably him talking out of his ass, but maybe the cubs know they're out so they don't care about leaks anymore

Speculation is fun and has that kid-waiting-for-Christmas-morning vibe, but I just don’t see how anyone will know until something officially happens. I have my doubts the Cubs will prevail, but until there’s an official announcement to the contrary, hope remains.

edit: by “anyone,” I mean fans and non-industry folk.

I mean, maybe. But then...I guess what's the point of leaking it? The Cubs aren't getting anything from it. And to Bob? Or if not Bob and this is second hand...to whom? Feels weird.

I'll admit some of it from my end is copium. But part of it is really just a bit confused. Seems like you've come this far, there's little reason to leak this.

If the Cubs are officially pivoting (not say they are) this leak is probably coming from a team/player they are pivoting to. I wouldn’t trust anything, especially coming from Bob.
