That's shocking. AAV not so much (although higher than I'd be willing) but 5 years? I wish him well, but I think he's already plateaued so you never know when the rapid slide may happen.

That said, Cards are sort of in a win-now mode for the next few years, despite their farm, so it makes some sense for them do it. I'll be curious how their situation shakes out over the next decade. Can they seamlessly transition from this win-now group to a new young core? Rarely happens, but the near ready high upside talent gives them a shot.

Yeah, I love Willson, but I don't see things going all that well for him from age 32ish onward. Which is why I could stomach letting him go.

That said, he'll almost certainly hurt us a time or two over the next couple of years, and I'm not looking forward to it.

That or he’s going to press like he’ll vs us like he does in big spots and slash like .125/.185/.350 with a 35% K rate vs us

most catchers who are bad at the art of catching definitely get better once they turn 30, leave the team of their youth and all their familiar surroundings, move to the middle of nowhere and cash in on life-changing money. I expect him to win 5 MVPs

I am going to die a little inside each game I have to watch Willy play against the Cubs in a Cardinal uniform.

You'll feel better when he loses any concept of the strike zone, swings out of his shoes, and strikes out every PA because of how badly he spazzes out wanting to do damage against them.

Not really. It's a travesty that they are letting him go. It would be different if Amaya was raking in AAA.

A travesty?

His positional flexibility and introduction of the DH may mitigate the aging question somewhat. I heard an interview with JD last year where he said that if Willie were to come back to the Cubs it was understood that he would be doing much less catching; maybe the Cardinals will transition him as well.

Willson has a good bat for the catcher position, but I don't think it's going to carry him at all at DH/1B.

I think he was posted in the last few days? Sox must have bid WAYYYYY above the rest of the industry because these guys usually use almost all of their 30 Day window

I'm not sure I'd give him 4 years at that AAV unless the plan was he would be the main catcher and maybe DH on the side.

So, it cost us $39 million to trade Heyward for Bellinger and we still might end up with a weak hitting LH outfielder?

Still worth it

But this time the "LH outfielder" will be in the best shape of his life

Also he is sure to have fully reworked his swing during spring training.

... seventh time is a charm ...

Except Bellinger plays an elite CF

Let's hope so.
