Don't want to even pay minor leaguers minimum wage for spring training so instead they

MLB hired an expert at a rate of $775 per hour who argued that players in spring training actually receive a value of $2,200 weekly from their teams, based on what youth and amateur players pay for baseball training.

“This figure is an estimate of the costs plaintiffs would have had to incur had they attended a baseball prospecting camp instead of participating in the minor leagues,”

Last year, Bloom argued that “players gained generally beneficial life skills from their time in the minor leagues.”

“In particular, Players had the opportunity to develop their language skills,” Bloom wrote. “Plaintiffs testified that minor league training allowed them to develop their communication skills, leadership ability, discipline and time management skills.”

So based on the reports it certainly doesn't seem like a "great" offer or whatever horsefeathering Manfred said. I feel like owners aren't going to budge any more on the CBT thresholds themselves but I'm really hoping there's wiggle room with the penalties.

Yeah I'm not sure how discouraged to be. The owners barely moved on the two most important issues. On the other hand, they did move on basically everything. And at this point on most of the smaller issues the deal is in a decent place. So if the plan was to clear the deck on most issues so they can just go back and forth on the CBT, this offer might actually be very productive. But if Manfred considers this like best and final then we're in for a long haul.

I like reading facebook comments from the people opposed to universal DH. Its like, tell me that you voted for Trump twice without mentioning politics.

I hate both Donald Trump and the universal DH. If there's any sort of correlation between those two issues, I have to imagine it's a weak one.

I love democracy, and I love classic, strategic baseball which encourages deeper benches and creative problem-solving.

there's an argument to be made that with interleague play, the strategic lines that separate national league and american league baseball have blurred considerably. i love double-switches as much as the next person and as cool as it was to see jon lester go deep like once every 50 or 100 at-bats, i prefer the cubs put out the best lineup possible (insert payroll joke here). if that means we can't see pitchers with shitty swing mechanics anymore, i'm fine with that.

I like reading facebook comments from people that can't articulate a coherent or original thought so they make false equivalencies in the hopes of sounding provocative. It's like telling me you sister and mother is the same person without stating it.

I've always sided with the MLBPA dating back to '94. However, after witnessing these last two months combined with the Ricketts' ownership; my distain has only multiplied.

Can’t remember where I heard it but I always liked the idea of tying the DH to the starting pitcher. When the SP leaves, the DH is gone too. Pretty much eliminates pitcher hitting but still includes the late game strategy. Plus if you really wanted to be strict with it and tie it to the SP regardless of how quickly the SP gets pulled, it would put a big damper on the opener unless a team just wanted to sacrifice a position player immediately.

I'm 100% for the DH, I used to enjoy the thought of managers being creative and having an impact on the game but it just drags the game down.

Watching a pitcher hit is painful.

Yeah I'm pretty all in on this. Rule changes that increase the value of the starting pitcher help with basically all of MLB's non-economic ills. And given that teams have already gotten away from dedicated full time DHs, I don't see much in terms of negative unintended consequences.

horsefeathers “strategy” there really isn’t much of it and pitchers hitting (or potentially hitting) is dumb.

We’ve gone over this before, but it’s not a hugely consequential thing in either direction. Bullpen and lineup management without a DH is small but real, and Pitchers take like 4% of PA in the NL game.

I like the idea too, but the problem is it penalizes teams whose starting pitcher gets injured or absolutely shelled early in the game. They already had an uphill battle to come back, and now they have to do it without their DH.

Mostly I just don't understand why the DH is being claimed as also a win for the players? Is the thinking that the owners want the DH for something other than money reasons? What changes for the players here? This opens the door wider for the Kris Bryants of the world to find work well into the 30s and even the 40s, but this was true already for that extremely small group of hitters/players. For everyone else it's just another piece of data, which is all, used against them in contract negotiations because DHs make nothing and have huge offensive standards to meet to be a star. What team even has an everyday DH besides Nelson Cruz's most current employer?

I mean, you hit the nail on the head. It gives teams more options for where to play those superstar hitters in the late stages of their mega-deal. And when you shift them there, it opens up another potentially-high paid starting spot.

Is it a huge difference maker for players? No. But it’s good for their major earners, and some slow footed sluggers. Possibly could increase longevity for some select pitchers, as well, though I imagine a lot of that number will be replaced by other fluke injuries such as those caused by line drives off a DH’s bat.
