Should see some cuts/restructures over the weekend. It's really interesting because with the cap constraints that every team is facing, you can probably upgrade some decent players while also paying them less money. I've been pro keeping Leno this offseason, but I would approach him about a pay cut first, and if not he's cut. With all the linemen out there, you can probably do better for less than the 11M Leno is due. Hicks may be able to be cut and while not necessarily upgraded, definitely can get production out of a cheaper guy. I'd imagine Fuller gets extended here soon. Whitehair, Jackson and Mack are also potential restructure candidates.

Cutting Leno and Graham, full base salary restructure for Whitehair, Jackson and Mack takes you from 14M over the cap to 27M in cap space. That doesn't even include touching Hicks' deal (which gives you an extra 10.5M if cut). You need 19M in space for Wilson (if traded). And you can create more space by restructuring his base salary and extending Robinson. So, getting a starting caliber tackle and some backup depth is very doable but it makes it ugly down the line. You'd probably have to draft a tackle and more depth if you have any picks left. But the Bears can definitely do some things without completely tearing apart the current roster and while adding a top QB.

I really wish we could get a resolution on Wilson so I could know what to root for. Like, if we're actually getting him, then yeah let's do every restructure and every cap saving move possible. Because of the league-wide cap issues, we're going to see a ton of quality players take 1 year deals in a good situation and re-enter the market next year. If we've got Wilson, we're a prime spot for those guys. Don't stress about losing depth because like you said we can probably replace guys for less, and maybe even upgrade while doing so.

But if we're not getting a star at QB, I have little appetite for pushing current cap pain forward into future seasons. I don't want to make future seasons worse for the sake of putting a slightly better team around Teddy Bridgewater.

Well said, I believe we're all tried of seeing good defense, pathetic offense Bear teams, do what it takes to get a real NFL QB. A QB opponents are going to take seriously, for once, if you have to give Roquan then do it, he and a good defense will be wasted on a team with Bridgewater/Mariotta/Darnold as the QB anyway.

i just do not care about anything regarding salvaging upcoming seasons without acquiring a franchise quarterback. the fallback fitzpatrick or bridgewater plans can wait til the last possible minute and are nearly entirely irrelevant to me. no qb, no care anymore.

it's cowherd so he probably has some sort of connection, even though it's not gonna be 5 first round picks for obvious reasons.

If you can actually get quality guys to come here on 1 year deals you can then let them walk next year and receive comp picks in 2023 for them.

Maybe. You have to replace them in 2022 then. Unless you can replace them in 2022 with mostly cut candidates or cheap contracts, you'll offset a lot of your debits.

But Pace does seem to value the comp pick process, even though it took a few years to get it going... hope he's getting those consistent picks going forward.

True. And there probably won’t be as many cuts next year with the cap exploding back up. But utilizing the comp system would be a good way to recoup some of the draft capital lost in a potential Russell Wilson trade.

Unfortunately the NFL did remove one big loophole last year with the option loophole. And it turns out Massie was signed with an option, likely with the loophole in mind, which ended up being moot. Not sure if there will be other loopholes to exploit. But ideally its just a natural consequence of simply not being able to afford guys too and not something you have to go too far out of your way for.

This guy has posted "reports" before. Not sure how accurate they are but hes been talking about russell and just tweeted this:

Absolutely. Obviously, the Bears have to get under the cap in the next few days. But some of these moves can wait until there is a resolution at QB. Basically you can create space as you need it.

I believe this pulls the Bears out of the red cap-wise, but not by much

I actually think they were 24M over after the kicker and punter signings. LOL

Posted
I was wrong, apparently they now have 4M in cap space.

"Mr Wilson, you can sign with us for $4 mil or face another season with Pete Carroll" = Bears win SB 2022

Ok, not realistic, but it's fun to think

Mario Edwards is re-signing with the Bears, muti-year deal. He is suspended for the first 2 games of 2021. Interesting to see what this means for Hicks.

Did anybody read the Adam Jahns "mini makeover" columns on The Athletic?

He has them trading Robinson for Darnold and a 3rd/4th. Spinning Darnold and that 3rd with two 1s for Wilson and a 5th. Then drafting a WR with the first pick in 2021 (2nd). Only way this works is if Seattle actually wants Darnold. But it does leave the Bears with a number of mid-draft picks an the ability to move some around to either grab a 3rd rounder they want earlier than they'd otherwise get, or potentially add to the 2022 draft surplus.

I've been kinda lowkey waiting for something like this. Get Darnold and have everyone think the Bears are going with him, then flipping him for Wilson. And yeah, they would have to know Seattle even wants Darnold before this could even go down.
