NFL perpetual 2020 regular and postseason non Bears thread

Then why doesn't it happen very often?

This article is now 7 years old, and it blames mainly the short passing game, but also points out the point I was making: when a defender has nothing between him and the goal line except the ball he just intercepted, well....

That type of play sets him up perfectly

I ask again, is it still the regular season?
I don't know what you are taking about

It looked stupid in hindsight, but that doesn't necessarily mean that it was a stupid call or that those passes are bad plays. Getting the ball to a quick player in space with a pretty high percentage throw can sometimes lead to big gains! Just like all plays there is a cost/benefit calculation and you seem to be ignoring the benefit side of things.

*I personally hate the play too, but I also generally trust the people that design NFL offenses more than my dumb, emotional fan brain

Minny has John Shoop Derangement Syndrome

I can't remember, did Shoop like to call that play? Maybe that's it. I'm emotionally damaged from those days.

But honestly, it isn't just a WR screen that bothers me, it's any pass into the flat where the DB has the perfect opportunity to jump the play. whatever

This discussion led me to watch every pick 6 from the 2019 season. There were a few themes. The 5-10 yard out is likely the biggest culprit on there. Next would be the 5-6 yard pass usually to a tight end in the middle of the field, although there were a few busted quick slants as well. A couple RB screens, one RB in the flat. No WR screens on there. It was so funny seeing Jameis appear over and over and over again on the video.

You just described about 1/4 of the Saints offensive playbook.

You can look at the outcomes of WR screen attempts and you'd only be getting a partial picture of the effectiveness of the play. If you can threaten plays like that, your go routes becomes much more effective. The same applies to running plays. There is a balance, and a lot of teams get that balance wrong, but in-and-of-itself, WR screens and immediate passes to the flats are pretty much required from time to time to make offenses effective and stretch defenses.

Apparently the Browns are doing this with an OL and coaches that don’t necessarily know each other.

I heard that, how and why is that?

I didn’t catch all of it but I heard some coaches aren’t there (COVID?) and that injuries had made it necessary to play a newly-signed OL or two.

Brief scan of articles - they’ve been dealing with a COVID-19 outbreak.

If I was a Browns fan I’d definitely be calling in sick tomorrow.
