Juan Soto tests positive and is out.

That sure didn't take long.

There were rumors he had it for a week+ now, iirc. He was away from the team with little explanation when summer camp opened. Kendrick had it too and is back now and I think Robles or another position guy had it as well.

Like 17 Seconds I'm cool with this for this year but not afterwards. Curious what the players got out of the deal.

It’s a fake season, do whatever you want, but don’t you dare touch the playoff format for real seasons in the future

Yup. I think the current format is perfect. I go back and forth on the DS being 7 games instead of 5 but that's it.

It's already too late. I guarantee they will change it to that stupid thing, just like they'll add that absurd runner-on-2nd rule.

Have you ever been watching game 4 of some random AL division series like Angels-Twins or whatever and thought “man, I sure am glad we are guaranteed at least another week of this before moving on to the ALCS”?

I mean, I haven’t, but I also don’t actually like baseball so maybe it’s me.

There's frequently at least one really good DS I want a lot more of. So is the an extra week of the good series worth an extra week of the duds? It's close, that's why I waffle on that part.

I'm still not a fan of the second wild card but can live with it. If it was best of 3 I'd be more for it. I just can't stand playing 162 games, and then possibly being 1 and done before the real playoffs start because the other team was able to start 2015 2nd half Arrieta. (I know, odd pointing out an example of a time that greatly benefitted us but still, doesn't sit right with me) But again, its not the worst thing ever, I just prefer it not be 1 and done.

One-and-done before the real playoffs start is awesome, win your division if you don't like it, and also the idea that the ninety-damn-seven-win Cubs wouldn't have made the playoffs without a 2nd wild card alone is enough for me to support it.

The only problem with the format is the problem with any format at all, and that's that the owners have managed to turn it into a reason to avoid spending money or making big trades ("Why break the bank for a coin flip?")

win your division if you don't like it

Sure until you are in a division where one team wins 100+ games virtually every year a la the AL East and West with the Yankees and Astros. The A's have had one of the more enjoyable and good teams in the league the last 2 seasons and all they have to show for it is 2 playoff losses. I know, if they want to advance they should win the game. But when you play 1 game playoffs, luck can play a huge factor.

I agree about the 97 wins not making the playoffs thing sucking. Would have been absolutely devastating to see that team, as awesome as they were playing in August and September not make the playoffs. But there's not a perfect system. To me, the best case scenario is a best of 3 series. Heck play all the games at 1 location and make them play a double header on the 2nd day. Either way, its better than having a 1 gamer where you don't even feel like your team made the playoffs if they lose.

Anyways, I realize that there are many people on this board that I could never convince that the 1 game format sucks, and that's fine. Like I said, I don't HATE it, I just don't prefer it.

It's already too late. I guarantee they will change it to that stupid thing, just like they'll add that absurd runner-on-2nd rule.

The runner on second better be temporary too. I know it is weird, but one of my absolute favorite things about baseball is that a game can theoretically last forever. I have loved long extra inning games ever since I was a kid, and whenever I go to a game I am usually quietly hoping for a 15 inning marathon. Not only that, but there is something about lying in bed at 2am with the Cubs still playing long after everyone else has finished. I know I'm rambling, but this is one rule change that I just can't accept.

Of all my favorite nights I've ever spent at Wrigley, the Lester walk off bunt game and the Soriano walk off slam game, both 12+ inning games, are in the top 3 (and seeing Bote's ultimate slam is the only reason they're not top 2). The idea of losing that possibility (or having it bastardized by nonsense rule changes) is depressing as hell.

Credit TT for this, but starting with a runner on second is about the dumbest thing they could do in terms of trying to end games quicker (outside of just leaving it as is). Think we'll see a fair amount of teams matching single runs, since there is so much incentive to give up outs to get that first runner in. If you want to come up with stupid solutions for this non-issue, just start with the bases loaded.

I’m putting “discuss COVID in the context of this MLB season” stuff in this thread.

This is certainly a concern now that games are being played
