it could obviously change, but wasn't the story at the beginning of the offseason that the Cardinals were at their payroll limit?

 

At the very least you have to assume they would have to move out Fowler or Carpenter both of which have full not trades.

I think the fear over such a deal really depends on how much you believe in Cardinal Devil Magic. Given what Morosi said, I'd imagine a deal would look something like:

 

Carpenter or Fowler

Bader or Edman

Hudson

One of those top 4 prospects

 

That would be a severe hit to their depth both in the rotation and on the position player side, and honestly on paper wouldn't be worth it in my opinion, unless they were going to spend additional money to bolster their depth. BUT, that ignores the Cards' ability to will any gritty white guy into being a league average player wherever they need one. Given that I absolutely do believe in the Devil Magic, yeah I'm gonna start scoping out forehead veins.

I could see Arenado using his opt out if the Cardinals don't quickly put a great team around him.

 

Also he's not the same player away from Coors.

 

Wishful thinking I suppose but I already think the Cubs are looking at another 3rd place finish so whatever.

Eh, if we're going to lose to the Cardinals, I'd much rather have it be someone like Arenado or Goldschmidt doing the damage.

 

That would not comfort me in the slightest.

The Phillies announced Tuesday that center fielder Odubel Herrera has been designated for assignment. His 40-man roster spot will go to Nick Martini, whom the Phillies have claimed off waivers from the Reds.

 

I know it took them like 6 months to release him after the news came out but they still did it.
