Would take substantially more prospect capital and I doubt they're ready to empty the farm again

Would it though? The feedback from the Bryant trade rumors is that even superstars with "just" two years of control aren't super valued right now for totally legit reasons

Perhaps, but we also just saw a high upside young arm get moved for a DH with average at best power

So to make this crazy idea all work it would have to take something like the following. Assuming we still need to get under the LT and assuming we are currently ~$3 million over:

Trade 1: Willy, Bote, Heyward, 2-4 of non Davis, Nico, Amaya, Marquez prospects for Arenado. That's $30.5 million going out vs $32.5 million coming in so we are now $5.5 million over the LT.

Trade 2: Chatwood, ~$3 million and prospects going out for nothing coming back, so let's say we save $9 million. $3.5 million under now.

Trade 3: Q for someone like Griffin Canning, Pivetta, etc that can be in competition for a rotation spot. This saves $11.5 million so $15 million under.

FA signings: We need a catcher so let's go Russell Martin and say it takes $4 million. That gives us ~$11 million to add some sort of infielder, and OF'er and some rotation depth. I think we could do that. Probably can add 1 of Pillar, Dyson, Souza for the OF spot, Holt for IF spot, then someone like Alex Wood, Harvey, Cahill, Chacin, Walker, Nova, etc. (not inspiring but whatever it's "depth")

So the 26-man would look something like:

Position Players:

1. Vic C

2. Russell Martin C

3. Rizzo 1B

4. Nico 2B/IF/OF

5. Holt IF/OF

6. Happ IF/OF

7. Javy SS

8. Arenado 3B

9. Schwarber LF

10. Bryant CF/OF/3B

11. Souza/Pillar/Dyson OF

12. Descalso/Kemp IF/OF

13. Almora OF

Pitchers:

1. Lester

2. Yu

3. Hendricks

4. Mills

5. Wood/Chacin/Walker/etc

6. Kimbrel

7. Wick

8. Ryan

9. Wieck

10-13: Q trade guy, Cotton, Rea, Adbert, Winkler, Morrow, Maples, Mekkes, Phlam, Rule 5 guy etc.

I really don't think Canning is even remotely realistic as I'd say he's the odds on favorite to put up better numbers this year while being cheaper and with much more control.

Idk if he is either, just a type of guy to target. MLB ready, don't know what he is. Can be thrown in the mix to start. Let’s just call it Pivetta then, I’ve mentioned a Q for him swap earlier in the offseason.

Perhaps, but we also just saw a high upside young arm get moved for a DH with average at best power

The Rays also got back a very underrated Randy Arozarena, who has ML ready CF potential to go with a well rounded high OBP bat in the minors. He came up and made some loud contact at the ML level to close the season. Liberatore's a quality SP prospect but years away after a non-dominant A ball season that included a back injury. If anything I'd count more on whoever the Cubs trade getting elevated while alot of the Lindor headlines will rehash/reignite the two year window talk

You're clearly much higher on him than I am. For me he's a likely 4th OFer with an upside of David DeJesus.

Eric Longanhagen just said yesterday that he's likely to be a top 100 guy on their list.

For some reason I still believe in the Phillies' fit for both Quintana and Almora, would love Pivetta or Ranger Suarez or both or one plus LHP David Parkinson...Something like that

He's a 25 year old who didn't hit until juiced ball 2019.

Ah well. Was fun to get excited for a minute, even if it was such an outlandish idea. Back to being miserable.

Wait huh? He was the one that reported it earlier today. Is he saying he misspoke or did he hear something new since his first report?

One of the idiots at Bleacher Nation misheard or misunderstood what he said and ran with it from what I gather. Levine allegedly said he’s heard the Cubs have had internal talks of moving Bryant to CF with Bote going to 3B and then he followed it up with saying he could confirm the Passan report from this week that we are interested in Arenado/have checked in, but he didn’t say the two moves were linked. Someone at BN took that to mean KB to CF and a trade for Arenado, which wasn’t what he said or meant at all.

brett is such a dumbass

Yeah, but he’s a shill too, to be fair.

I don’t get the shill vibe from him or his site. He’s just kinda dumb and a fun loving fanboy. It doesn’t help that he surrounds himself by as dumb or dumber writers other than Cubs Prospect guy (Bryan Smith I think). Part of me thinks that’s by design so he appears smarter if he has idiots around him.

if you write about the cubs and you aren't constantly going after the ricketts and what they've been doing, then you're a shill

Eh. It’s a harmless site that is pretty fair imo. Bryan is amazing with the prospects side and Brett certainly understands (probably more than me) advanced metrics and value of players. He’s also been outspoken (to a degree) about the cubs ownership.

He certainly deals with and tolerates an entire group of idiots who follow him/BN. But, he’s running a site for money and I feel like he/BN is simply placating a bit for the sake of a paycheck and I can’t fault him or anyone for that.

In short, I feel like the content is smart enough and fair enough to follow while also knowing they are “dumbing things down” and not willing to go all out with transparency if that meant alienating their market completely to the point it hurts the bottom line. I’m ok with it - it’s one of those things that you take it for what it is.

Was hoping Donaldson ended up there for the sake of keeping better options open for a KB trade since Texas doesn’t have the prospects to deal for him.

A case of an oft injured guy returning to an org that knows him?

Or a case of a healthy workhorse going to a completely new organization that doesn't know him at all?
