Could be only 1 year of Machado if he and Hosmer opt out. Hosmer would have 3/39 left on the deal and would be going into his age 32 season so it’s not likely to actually happen.

But his leadership is ageless...

Except getting superstars into the AL is good thing for us. And the Sox signing them puts more pressure on the Ricketts for their horrible offseason.

I wish we made badass moves.

The Cubs did in signing Lester (A), Heyward (D) and Darvish (Incomplete). And the latter two signings may have contributed, if even slightly, to the hesitancy to drop much more coin on a much better player.

Also signing Fowler under the radar and bringing him to ST was pretty badass.

Of all the things to be excoriating the Cubs over - and lord knows this offseason is an embarrassment of riches on that score - the Darvish contract should be nowhere near the list. That was a bargain at the time by any objective standard and he still has 5 years to prove it was a smart signing.

Chatwood (whom I liked) is really the only larger contract we gave out that you could argue the process behind the signing wasn’t sound. The results have lagged on some but it’s hard to argue against the process. We got Darvish less than he was projected to get and that 6th year thrown on was effectively for LT purposes.

There's no way that Darvish signing wasn't hinged on the idea they'd be getting the most bang for their buck in the front half.

Well, yeah. Hopefully we get 2-3 good years out of him yet.

Let's not sleep on giving Zobrist $56m to give us 10-11 WAR, whatever leadership qualities you want to assign to him, and some of the biggest hits in franchise history. Mitigated slightly by having to hear his wife's voice before every AB, but still.

kind of weird seeing all the "why are the padres doing this they're not in their window yet" takes. like ... how do you expect to get in a window guys

people are astonishingly dumb

i'm not saying it's a bad idea for the upper echelon teams to add premier free agents, but it confuses the hell out of me how the media and fan consensus seems to be that it makes more sense for those teams to add the high end guys than the teams on the fringe... like HMM who stands to benefit more from adding 4-5 wins to their projection?

a couple chatty cathys on the ferry this morning were talking about it, and all I heard was "I don't get it" and "there goes the collusion idea". I had to turn up my tunes to block them out.

i even heard a couple of white sox fans in my office yesterday basically saying "that's fine... $300 million for one guy? let someone else pay that"

Off topic, but 'dolt' is such an underrated insult.

there was an old old old old old school copy editor i used to work with who would read headlines out loud to himself. every time he would see a headline he didn't like he would read it out loud and add "you dolts." It was great

I'm trying to make "dolt" and "clod" come back in a big, big way.

But yeah, the Stockholm Syndrome of most baseball fans is insane about these kinds of signings.
