Relative to the last four years? No.

Given everything else that the start of the Cubs season represents (spring, sunlight, something to watch/follow every day, two less months of Trump, etc.)? Yes.

The second outweighs the first.

it's the least optimistic I've felt in 4 or 5 years.

also, it's 2/4, so I'm not going to waste energy getting excited about a future date when pitchers and catchers will report.

I'm really not excited right now. I'm sure spring training will change some of that, but who knows.

Happy for the return of baseball, yes. Not excited about this iteration of the Cubs (barring a surprise acquisition or two). I say this thinking the range of possible outcomes is Cubs have best record in the NL to Cubs finish 3rd in the division. Nothing in that range would surprise me.

Baseball coming back has me excited but I feel mostly dread about the Cubs. Probably a 90 win team but the division will be tough and things could go south for both the pitching staff and offense.

To say nothing of the continued Ricketts loathsomeness, Addison Russell's existence, offseason from hell, etc.

I am dreading some kind of Faustian nightmare where Russell emerges from his suspension playing amazingly, and inexplicably becomes the MVP-type piece that pushes them over the top. That storyline is so impossibly grotesque (and really any kind of BS "redemption" storyline that results in him still playing for the Cubs), and I loathe that he is still a part of this team.

You guys spend an insane amount of time talking about the Cubs for people who aren't excited about the Cubs.

Don't act like you're too good for some juicy hatewatching.

I hope bad things happen to everyone in the organization except Javy, Bryant and Schwarber. And I’m not that worried about the last two

Poor Rizzo.

I'm sure I'll be excited when stuff starts happening and it starts feeling more and more like spring...I even managed to get excited for the tank seasons to start.

Otherwise, I won't be unless we get an awesome surprise Harper signing.

i keep pretending that im not excited about it but really i am

there are enough things that could plausibly go right (bryant healthy, maybe javy takes another leap? schwarber could luck into a .280 avg and turn into a monster, darvish might be healthy and awesome, happ could bounceback and hit 30 bombs, contreras could be a stud again, addison russell could get hit by a car) that it makes the season worth following

but also it could all go very wrong and in that case at least it will be fun to talk horsefeathers about the ricketts and turn on theo
