Well, if we're sticking with the whole, "they're actually doing the opposite of what they're saying" thing, then maybe this means they're actually signing Harper, getting rid of Russell, AND firing Joe.

What does that say about the front office getting rid of pitching and hitting coaches with no major issues (other than the Bosio racism that we didn't know about at the time, maybe Theo and Jed did) and then firing their handpicked replacements after 1 season? Not criticizing the FO in general, just always thought letting both of them go in one offseason was an odd move even if they identified 2 people they liked more.

This seems like taking a shot at Joe more than anything if Hickey’s fired. I’m pretty indifferent on Hickey but he was Joe’s guy and if we’re going to keep Joe around for a year it seems like a weird move if you want your manager happy and motivated.

I don't understand what Hickey did wrong. The pitching staff started out struggling a bit but basically carried this team when the offense fell apart.

PTR is back and coaching staff upheaval, not the start to the offseason I wanted.

I almost feel like the FO wants to go in a different direction with the manager but don't want to fire the coach who won the franchises first championship in 108 years.

The way this is going down, I wonder if it's not so much firing Hickey as him wanting to leave for some reason? Otherwise i don't know why they didn't pull the trigger at the same time they did Chili.

Yeah it seems like they’re trying to smoke Joe out with this move

Yup, this sounds exactly like they just don't want to technically take the shot on Joe.

I would not shed a tear at all if Maddon WAS actually fired, but that they're treading so carefully with this just gets my doom boner going in that it makes me think they don't want the fans getting surly over both firing the WS manager AND having a disappointing offseason. Like, they WANT to fire him, but they don't want the extra fan blowback.

Plus the PR hit they're going to take when Russell gets brought back, just to complete the trifecta.

yeah I don't think it's a great loss, but just weird timing.

It's totally a shot at Joe. The timing is curious, but there could be a million reasons for that.

I was as pissed off at Hickey as anyone the first half of the season (I have the posts to prove it), but outside of Chatwood's utter collapse, which probably wasn't his fault, on balance he seemed fine. But if all these changes energize the team somehow, that's ok too.
