Can we fire this turd into the sun yet? Last night was inexcusable bullpen use yet again.

Other than giving Cishek too big a leash I thought he handled the bullpen fine last night. He’s had far more worse games this year when it comes to bullpen usage.

He has to finish the season so that replacing him can be sold as a big offseason move in lieu of a real signing. Theo and Joe Girardi will talk all offseason about building a culture of accountability and Sergio Romo will be the team's biggest signing.

I can 100% see a scenario where Maddon gets canned, the front office decides that it was the manager who sucked, not the players, and come back next year with essentially the same roster and (probably) a worse manager.

Oh I think that’s very likely and I was thinking of an offseason today where that’s the case that I’d still like and think this is it.... move Willy to RF full time, sign Grandal, trade for Manuel Margot (platoon in CF with Heyward) and send Almora out, Happ, Bote, Nico and Kemp are the “bench bats” but Nico plays plenty, add one of those many SP for the 5 spot who won’t cost a lot and one decent bullpen arm.

Yeah if you want to go hard on the Ricketts being extremely cheap and just wanting to pump out money in Wrigley theory, blaming a manager making like $5m a year for all of the issues and then hiring a cheaper one and calling it the solution is about as good as they can do.

What kind of contract does he get? Grandal's lowkey the modern prototype at C and just an badass player in general, if last year's and eventually this year's totallynotcollusion period puts him in the 2-3 year range maybe the Cubs should really be interested. Sets up Contreras+ for Betts (ha) if Boston's into it (ha) and they should be maybe (ha)

He’s going to be 31 on opening day, I’d guess he doesn’t get more than 3 years guaranteed as a catcher. Obviously is there’s a Contreras centric deal for Betts you do it, but if we aren’t going to bring Nick back shifting Willy to OF full time and bringing in Grandal is a nice way to supplement what Nick has been.

If you don't want Contreras at C, you trade him for the best package you can get. He is a top 5 catcher by oWar (M. Garver, Grandal, Realmuto, and G Sanchez ahead of him this year). He'd be average in the OF as far as offensive value, and probably a negative defensively.

Also, to stay with the thread topic - Maddon put Tony Kemp at leadoff for a game they played while in the midst of the stretch run of the playoffs, and it wasn't even his worst move in the series so far. Fire him, get someone else in, make some personnel changes and see what happens.

How does Ross come off on commentary does he fly the huge red flags that Sandberg did in his Yahoo articles?

I still think it takes an offer he can't refuse to go back to a full time baseball schedule, and I'm skeptical that offer would come.

I also still buy into the theory that it's been Loretta since he was hired as bench coach to take over in 2020 or at some point mid-season if it was warranted.

I haven't listened to much of Ross, but when I have, he's usually offering a player perspective rather than any particular strategy thoughts.

He just seems like the kind of guy that is going to heavily (Dusty level) favor some players over others, and not necessarily based on talent. I base this solely on the ~100 or so words I've heard him speak.

So...like Maddon.

I get this feel from him too and don’t think whoever they bring will be allowed as much freedom to make uninformed/gut decisions and have to go more “by the book.” So if it’s him I’m guessing he’s told it’s not gonna be that way, but maybe he is a data driven guy and our impression is wrong.

I mostly don’t want Ross though because, even with expected turnover, he will have played with a lot of these guys and I see it hard for him to be an authority figure with them. I don’t want a Girardi style guy but there’s times a manager needs to come down on dudes and I think when Ross would have to do it the message might not be taken seriously or get across to guys like it should.

Unless gm was right all along.

My main concern with him is that he is way to buddy buddy with Rizzo and Lester. Would Ross take out Lester if he was clearly out of gas but a couple of outs shy of a win? Would he jump Rizzo's ass for getting thrown out easily trying to stretch a double into a triple?
