I dislike watching Quintana pitch baseball games.
I always have. Even when he is good, there is just something unexciting about the way he pitches. That is perfectly fine if he was consistently good, but he isn't. And it doesn't help that he has the added baggage of having cost the Cubs a likely future superstar.

So, yeah, the Cubs have an awesome team BA and OBP. The slugging? Ehhhhhhhhh...11th, according to BR.

They blow everyone else out of the water with 910 guys LOB; the only other team that's close are the terrible Reds with 899. Then you have to get down to the Giants at 855 in 3rd, then the Marlins, the Rangers and the Nats. The Red Sox are all the way down at 7th, with 829. Obviously, leaving a bunch of guys on base is going to be a thing that bad teams are going to do, but also teams that are good and good at getting on base, and the Cubs are obviously the latter. The problem seems to be the relative lack of power; they're right up there with the Red Sox in terms of BA and OPB, but it's because they're a team that REALLY loves to walk and slap singles around that then ends up weirdly missing the big XBH you'd expect given their other numbers and their roster.

is the wind blowing out like crazy or anything?

not that braun's second dong sounded like it needed any help

Every ball hit would have gone out in a hurricane.

It was blowing right to left, I believe

The worat part is that Quintana is still probably the guy I have like the 3rd most faith in

Provided Lester's record-scratch run of terribleness levels off somewhat, I think I'd have Q 4th behind Hendricks, Hamels and Lester, and Montgomery's closing in on him.

I have far more faith in Monty than Q at this point.

Lester kinda sucked even when he was good, though.

I'd have the hopes and dreams of Darvish's return also not being a massive disaster ahead of Lester and Q (and behind Hamels and Hendricks).

Yeah, if Yu comes back healthy he's 3rd.

horsefeathers, even if he's not healthy he might be 3rd at this point.

They’ve been playing like a very bad team and covering it up with sequencing luck for almost a month.

I think this is wrong. I'm not sure, but David will have numbers to prove it.

Run differential for the last 23 or whatever games is -1 per game. They’ve been winning all the close ones and losing all the blowouts. That’s what lucky bad teams do.

You're better than using run differential over a 23 game sample. You've lost a tick on your fastball from your doom-boner prime.

I keep repeating myself but we are a lot like last year’s Red Sox

It's horsefeathering weird; it really looks as simple as, "they don't hit for enough power to offset how bad the starting rotation has been." Outside of the slugging, they're pretty much across the board right up there with the Red Sox.

And while there's little reason for me to assume the slugging WON'T just kick in at some point, it really hasn't so far this season, and seems to just be getting worse.

The teams played pretty mediocre-to-bad since the All-Star break, we can all acknowledge that. They are in real danger of not winning their division (though pretty much a lock for the playoffs, though wildcard is significantly worse than winning the division)

There's really not much more to say. You just gotta hope the injured players come back strong, that some players that have been bad get good, and that Maddon is able to keep the leaky ship together for another 40ish games

What is going on with Morrow? Not that that is our big problem at this point but how long is he playing horsefeathering catch?

I was kinda figuring that the org was taking their time with Bryant, Morrow and Darvish as long as possible, like, taking this whole extra rest approach as far as they can. They assume they can, at leas, hold on and win the division, so try to get those guys as right as possible for the playoffs.

Can we do another cardiac comeback cubs thing then start blowing teams out tomorrow?

Unfortunately momentum is your next day’s starting pitcher
