Cimber also going to Cleveland with Hand, Mejia the headliner going to San Diego.

This feels a whole lot like the Samardzija/Hammel deal.

Or like when the Nats got Doolittle and Madson in the same deal. One stop shopping to fix the bullpen.

I was also thinking of the angle that they're getting a prospect that neither individual would fetch alone, but has lost a little bit of luster since the start of the season(Russell/Mejia).

Interesting trade.

Going off this then, would something like Albertos for Tyson Ross and Kirby Yates be something people would be willing to do?

Absolutely I’d rather have Richard than Ross though

I don’t think Hand was a realistic target for us, so I’m glad the Indians got this done now because they were definitely getting a RP(s) and should be out on the more reasonable targets for us (Yates, Britton, Conley, Barraclaugh, etc). Edited by Cubswin11

Albertos is pretty worthless at this point.

I'm just thinking out loud. Albertos was very recently our top prospect and and is still very young and has potential. He's having a very forgettable year. Because of that are we saying he is now actually useless as a trade chip/prospect?

Certainly useless as a trade chip.

you could get more value out of me in a trade because i could actually write the press release announcing the trade

There's some space between valuable enough for that proposed trade to work and useless.

i know mejia was blocked but that's a top 10 prospect for a freakin reliever

Yeah but it's like a decade worth of control. Hand has all of this year and then 19, 20 and 21. Cimber has been really impressive and he's got less than a year of service time.

Yeah, the amount of years of team control is crazy. Cimber is a good arm and I think this is a great trade for Cleveland.

I thought they were sending Mejia+. I mean Mejia might not even stick at C, and his bat might regress. Lots of ways this trade goes south for SD.

huh? this trade literally cannot go south because SD is a terrible team and they turned a reliever into what should be an impact bat. Even if Mejia never pans out they got a top 5 prospect for ... relievers. Last year when they tried to move Hand no one offered anything close to Mejia, so this is a huge win for them

The opportunity cost is a real thing. Other teams were probably offering prospect packages for Hand + Cimber as well. Probably no prospect as good as Mejia, but more prospects in return. Sometimes unranked prospects or lower ranked prospects end up being really good players.

I'm not super high on Mejia and think he's slightly overrated. We'll see what happens.

A great win for the Padres ... an understandable move for the Indians.

I think this is a huge win for the Padres. They got an elite positional prospect. Those guys don't get moved much. I think he can stick at catcher, but if not, he'll get a chance somewhere. Brad Hand is nice, but a good pro scouting department should be able to find failed starters to try in the pen.

As for the Indians, their window is now. Their pen's regressed badly, and this was a one-stop fix. Cimber looks like a capable pen arm. For a team trying to win now, it makes enough sense.
