I like this quote from GRB

And never mind how balanced their rotation is. A hard throwing righty with great offspeed, a crafty lefty that cuts and moves the ball around the knees\corners, a control freak that lives below the zone with sneaky life on his pitches, a deceptive lefty that hits spots all day long, and Chatwood. Facing them will be hell on Matheny..

I, being a very smart Brewers fan, am glad we didn't sign a 31-year-old Yu Darvish. Now we can just sign Jake Arrieta, a 31-year-old, instead. He should fit right in with our other big signing, 31-year-old Lorenzo Cain.

Before the Cubs acquired Quintana on July 13th, they're rotation was comprised of:

Arrieta

Lester

Hendricks

Lackey

E. Butler

Now it's made up of:

Darvish

Quintana

Hendricks

Lester

Chatwood

I'd say they've improved themselves...

Their rotation depth on July 13th was:

Montgomery

Butler

Zastryzny

Frankoff

Buchanan

(Mills was on the DL and Tseng had only one start in AAA at that time)

Now it's:

Montgomery

Tseng

Butler (for now)

Mills

Alzolay

L. Farrell

Smyly (eventually)

I'd say they've improved themselves there, too...

I like how Theo and Jed knew going in and referred to 2017 as "somewhat of a bridge year" as their rotation and pitching depth wasn't quite where they wanted it to be and their young hitters were still gaining MLB experience.

And yet they still made their 3rd consecutive NLCS.

Welp, 2018 ain't gonna be no bridge year.

lol - I forgot all about Smyly.

The playoff bullpen is going to have Morrow, Cishek, Edwards, Strop, Smyly & Chatwood.

Gonna miss jake..hope that whole tipping pitches thing was just that

I trust Theo so by the time to research that he was tipping and it’s fixable. I too am gonna miss Jake, Yu is better and I take him over Jake ever time but hope Jake goes to a non-Brewer team like the Twins or Angels or whatever so I don’t need to root against him.

If Yu wasn’t tipping then we should somehow be worried about our offense, because he dominated it.

It seemed like something only the Astros knew about (even going back to his Ranger days), still we should've picked up on it but maybe he wasn't doing it until the WS? Also maybe he just pitched some real shitty games in the WS and wasn't tipping? He also carried a no-hitter through 5 innings vs the D'Backs in the DS.

it keeps mind fucken me that the cubs, who never ever ever sign a meaningful FA have signed Lester, Heyward (ok that was a miss,) Zobrist, and Darvish in 3 of the last 4 offseasons

edit: and will likely head into the 2019 offseason as favorites to sign Harper

edit again: im not counting dawson because that was weird and i was a child and yes i forgot about soriano BUT OTHER THAN THAT

now imagine if Justin Wilson isn't what he was with the Cubs last year

And if any of them fail before then, Detroit Wilson, 2015 Grimm, Tseng or WORST CASE SCENARIO: Montgomery

Remember how MacPhail and Hendry actually had a policy that they liked to let guys hit FA before they would try to extend them?

And Wilson (assuming he's back to being Wilson).

Here's the Cub's payroll outlook for the next few years with Darvish. I assume Gimenez will make more than the league minimum if he's in the majors, but haven't seen any details, otherwise 2018 should be pretty much locked in.

To me the big takeaway is how well set up the team already is for 2019. Horsefeathers will happen for sure, but as of right now we'll be walking into an insanely loaded FA class with money to burn and no holes that need to be filled.
