I think my thoughts on the trade are rather simple ... Ryan Pace had to make the deal. Whatever the price, he had to make the move. For him, he's nearing the end of the rope for him, but that's besides the point. They had to make major improvements this year, and let's face it, a pass rushing linebacker was needed. Mack should make the entire defense better ... the interior linemen should get more one-on-one opportunities, Floyd should get better matchups, and the secondary should have a little more breathing room. In some respects, it should buy Roquan Smith some time as wel.

They needed a stud defense to buy time for Trubisky, because while one hopes for a Goff-like jump, it shouldn't be expected, and this organization is only going to go as far as he goes.

The Bears look to have a stud 3-4 defense (after missing out in the Jauron era ... since Jauron wasn't a 3-4 coach). Wouldn't surprise me if this defense jumps up a lot more than people think ... on paper, I think I could see this as a possible top 5 unit.

Amos

Jackson

Fuller

Amukamara

Mack

Smith

Trevathan

Floyd

Bullard?

Goldman

Hicks

yeah, i'd say so

defense could be a top 5 unit in the league, coupled with what i think can at least reasonably be expected to be an above average offense. if the offense is actually very good, this is a way better team than anybody sees coming.

Yeah, Jack makes everyone better. When will be be ready to play though? And when will Roquan be fully ready? I'm not going to raise my expectations TOO much for 2018. 2019 is a different story though.

As for giving up 2 1sts...... Realistically, after the pick has been made, more often than not, you make this trade with zero hesitation. Not easy to find top 5 defensive studs.

Suit him up week one. Isn't Donald playing?

I don't think Roquan will be playing with many restrictions early on (or for long, either)

People are speculating that Trevathan might be included in the trade which...would suck. 2 1sts and Trevathan is too much for me unless we get a 2nd or maybe 3rd back. Trevathan is great but can’t stay healthy

Trevathan can't stay healthy and there's a Trevathan in every free agency period. There is almost never a Mack caliber FA available. There's no possible way, if I were Pace, that I would let Trevathan be a sticking point. We also just drafted Smith and Iggy, so we could afford to move him if need be. That said I doubt it's Trevathan going to Oak anyway. But if it were, I put the probability of getting a 2 or a 3 back at close to zero.

Defensive End was where I felt they were going to need to spend some time looking for upgrades on the waiver wire. That was the one place where the depth seemed a bit weak to me. That's what made this trade make so much sense for the Bears. They had the cap space and plenty of depth on both sides of the ball mixed in with youth, which allowed the trading of draft picks. We know what we will get out of the defense. The offense is what we really don't know about, but I don't know that they could have added more to the offense than they did.

I can't help but be optimistic about the offense. The running game was already good. Adding Robinson, Burton, Miller and Gabriel and possibly even a healthy Kevin White gives the offense all kinds of different talents that can be utilized in a lot of ways. I'm a true homer, as this team is going to the playoffs!

I think this is the most effective tactic in the NFL today: get your QB in the draft, give him a year to adjust, then go all-in for his rookie contract years when the cap works in your favor. Damn we are all-in now.

Highway robbery. No idea how Pace pulled this deal off when so many other teams were trying. The Packers weren't willing to give up their two first rounders next year?

The front seven is now STACKED and they've got a guy who got Aldon Smith 20 sacks in a season running the show. The Bears were 7th in sacks last season where their top edge rusher played 10 games and got 4.5 sacks. Now add in Roquan and Mack and maybe a healthy Floyd. Think about something like this article comparing Fangio's use of Floyd-Hicks to Smith-Smith annnnnd replace Floyd with DPOY Mack.

https://sportsmockery.com/2017/09/how-leonard-floyd-is-the-biggest-reason-to-extend-akiem-hicks/

I don't know that much about the Raiders' front but I've got to think that this Bears front, along with Fangio takes Mack to another level. Given that he had 70 pressures last year, you'd think that he could have some much bigger sack totals if Hicks, Goldman, and Floyd demand more attention than his teammates in Oakland.

Now think of what this means for the number of turnovers the Bears will generate. Despite that high sack total they only had 100 pressures. Watching those highlights, it looks like Mack will up the havoc level pretty markedly, resulting in some nice picks off of pressure. Mack also seems pretty into the idea of the strip sack, so hopefully that becomes contagious like when Lovie's Bears always went for the strip. And you figure the offense is going to be much better, so the Bears will be playing with more leads and the opposing teams will have to throw.

I already thought the Bears were a playoff team, but now I think they win the division if they stay reasonably healthy. Regardless, Pace has really put together a good young team. He didn't hit in FA much the first couple years, but he left himself with a lot of cap space and this offseason when they were ready to compete he really made some incredible use of that cap space.

What you think about the Bears chances this year and for the future hinges largely on what you think about Trubisky, but it seems that regardless of where you view them on the Super Bowl contenders list this is clearly going to be a fun team to watch. Gadgetty offense with lots of talent at the skill positions and a very fast 3-4 defense with good young talent on every level, run by the DC who ran my favorite defense of the 2000s out in SF. I'm ready to see this thing against the Packers.

I also want to say I like how Pace consolidates future picks for top level young players today. He did it with Trubisky last year, Miller in this draft, and now Mack. It makes a ton of sense for where the team is to make these moves and I don't think you're really giving up any future value either, because these guys could play at a high level for a long time.

And to me, there really aren't any glaring holes on the whole team. The players individually may not be good enough to get it done, but there's no position on the team that I see as a huge weakness. Depth may not be the best in the secondary or maybe on the o-line, but the Bears second and third unit just mopped up the Chief's first unit, so you've gotta figure they have decent depth in general.

Thrilho, the Bears are a playoff contender, but I don’t see them being better than the Vikings with an unproven QB like Trubisky. Rodgers is too good to have them automatically vault past the Packers. Trubisky is the wild card and an unknown and he’s the most important position on the team. Things are looking great for the Bears and you gotta be hopeful. Worst case team is 9-7 if healthy, but let’s see how Mitch is with offensive weapons.
