Let's get this party started.

Bye, Felicia

The Chicago Bears officially have “parted ways” (it’s the 2018 version of the “mutual parting”) with Bears coach John Fox. And Fox has issued a statement in connection with his departure.

“Thank you to all the players, coaches, the city of Chicago and Bears fans everywhere, your passion for the game and this team is unmatched in the NFL,” Fox said. “Today is the tough part of our results-oriented business but I wish the Bears organization the best for years to come."

Ownership is going to have Pace hire a defense-first guy again, aren't they?

Depends on what they do with Fangio, in my opinion. If they make no announcement about him being let go today, then your prediction may come true.

I'm hoping Pace's press conference today is just Pace addressing the media and him taking ownership of the decision and coaching search. The Bears need to make him the standard bearer of this organization, anything involving Ted Phillips or any of the McCaskeys today will just look bad for them and will undermine him.

No, I do not believe so. They will have Pace hire whichever non-$8million man he wants.

Agreed

If they don't do anything with Fangio today, I will take that as a sign they intend to promote him to HC.

Not saying it would be a definitive sign they intend to go offensive minded HC if Fangio is let go, but I think them not getting rid of Fangio out of the gate makes it much more likely they keep him.

They arent promoting Fangio. They may try to convince him to stay on under a new HC however

There isn't really anything to do with him, his contract is up and the next bears coach will either attempt to keep him or not. There isn't anything to announce with him, regardless.

What offensive coaching prospects are at the top of the list? Pat Shurmur, Jim Harbaugh, Josh McDaniels, Pete Carmichael, Matt LaFleur, and throw in Dave Toub as a ST candidate. Hub was saying that there's new rules for coaches who are in the playoffs. I think he said you can hire a coach now who is still coaching with his current team or something like that instead of interviewing him and waiting for his team to lose.

Forgot to mention him. Has done wonders in Philly with Wentz, but has little play calling experience. Only called plays last year in Cleveland and one year at San Jose State.

I would love for Fangio to stay with the Bears, but apart from the Bears bringing in Jim Harbaugh (I'd throw $10 million per year and an ownership stake at him), he's pretty much out?

Hah imagine the McKaskeys offering a share of their ownership for a HC

Yeah, probably not happening, but if Harbaugh is on their radar, it’s the only way I see that occuring

Posted

Well that's an easy no then. I don't know when ownership stakes for a HC became a thing and don't understand how Harbaugh is viewed in that tier.

Defillipo is an intriguing hire. Would rather see a move like that than a failed college NFL retread.

The Bears have a lot of problems, as you'd expect from a last-place team, but they feel like solvable problems. I'm bought in on Trubisky, so having that settled probably fuels my optimism. And surely they are due for a good head coach post-Lovie.

I think it's because they at least have some top-end talents to build around. Hicks, Howard/Cohen, the safeties, these are positions where you can not just say "that's filled" but actually put out better players than your opponents. And god help me, I think Trubisky can become one of those guys soon.

And the receivers were so bad that there's a lot of ground to be gained just by fielding players who belong on an NFL roster.

Besides that, they need a ton of depth. Places like LB and OL and non-Hicks DL aren't the glaring needs like WR was, but they were filled with meh guys and bad backups to fill in for the meh guys when they got hurt.

Why? Harbaugh is a rah-rah college coach whose shtick wears thin on professionals.

He wears thin, but he gets results. Three straight NFC Championship games with the 49ers.
