At this point (minus a Yelich trade), I'm resigned to them signing Darvish and a couple of relievers and calling it an off-season.

Let the progression/regression of Schwarber and Heyward as well as Russell and Baez determine whether Harper or Machado is a bigger need next off-season.

This is pretty much where I am. Unless someone overwhelms them with an offer for one of the young guys, I’m comfortable going into the season with that roster.

haha I would hope so, considering that would put us with the highest projected WAR in MLB (at least, according to Steamer)

at least barring any big additions to the other upper echelon teams

Signing Darvish isn't a sure thing and those relievers are going fast.

I'm really not sure if they're in on Darvish at where the prices may go, or if they're trying to get him cheaper than the norm......

Either way, they're getting a starting pitcher and I'd be surprised if it was anyone worse than a Cobb type acquisition.

If they spend big in FA on one, I don't think we'll see anything more than NRI's for the rest of the staff. And maybe a backup C.

If they trade for the starter, I can see another major bullpen addition, plus some vet replacement bench type to replace whatever youngster we lost in the trade. And the backup C.

Either way, there's enough pen arms left to get an interesting NRI or 2. Probably a 7/8 type starting pitcher type too, if we don't trade for one.

I sort of still think they sign Cobb once his price and years lowers back down to what it should have been originally.

Wait...Darvish and two *more* relievers? Or Darvish and the two we already signed? If you're counting the guys we signed already, don't forget Chatwood and Smyly. If you're talking two more relievers, where will we put them all?

Nothing is going fast in this market.....

I think it’s becoming abundantly clear they have no idea what they are doing

They must’ve hired someone from the Cleveland Browns FO.

http://www.bleachernation.com/2017/12/29/heyman-cubs-and-cardinals-most-aggressive-on-machado-montgomery-in-cubs-offer/

Today, it gets a little stranger. Jon Heyman reports that the Cubs, together with the Cardinals, have been “two of the more aggressive teams that came closer than others to making an offer to tempt the Orioles.” It’s not entirely clear whether talks are totally over or still continue, but until moves foreclose the possibility, it’s fair to presume the Orioles are still interested in moving Machado – they just want to get the right return.

The Cardinals, Heyman later adds, seem to have pulled back a bit after acquiring Marcell Ozuna, and are also still trying to land Josh Donaldson from the Blue Jays.

As for the Cubs, Heyman cannot confirm the Russell, Albert Almora, Mike Montgomery rumor that was making the rounds, but he does say – without equivocation – that Montgomery was in the Cubs’ offer.

My current theory is that they want to add a star caliber player to replace Jake. They'd like it to be a pitcher, but they'll take what they can get. They thought Cobb might have been closer to Chatwoods AAV and when Cobb started stringing things along they jumped to finalize with Chatwood. When Otani didn't pick them and with the SP market unformed, they've jumped on Darvish. If they get Darvish, the Machado rumors die with the quickness. If Darvish goes elsewhere, they double down on trading non-Russell pieces for Machado and using Russell to get a SP. I continue to see little reason for Russell to be directly in a Machado deal unless Gausman is also involved.

My ideal scenario is Russell, Alzolay, Butler and other pieces for Machado and Gausman. And then Almora, Zagunis, Caratini for Yelich.

Yelich

Bryant

Rizzo

Machado

Schwarber

Contreras

Heyward

Baez

Come at me bro.

Hendricks

Go six man rotation.

Someone convince me that trading for Machado at all is the right move - I mean, he's obviously an excellent player, but it seems like getting him is going to require a lot of long-term value, if what's said about the Orioles' asking price is true. And for a team with a window like ours, giving away a bunch of long-term value for one year of an excellent player (who, I might add, does not really fill a position of need for us) seems like a sub-optimal use of resources.

Obviously, if we do trade for him, I'll be excited to watch him for a year, but I just have a hard time feeling too jazzed about any scenario that involves trading for Machado. And I agree with TT - any trade that involves sending Russell for Machado makes particularly little sense to me. If Russell is flipped for pitching, especially a good pitcher with multiple years of control, then that makes more sense.

There's no way the Cubs would acquire Machado without first moving Russell/Baez, right? It would tank their trade value

If it's not in the same deal, I'd imagine they would be simultaneous deals, like the Zobrist/Castro moves (I think it was Zobrist but I'm mobile and can't easily check).
