The source is Steve Phillips though, so let's not jump to conclusions yet. I mean five tweets ago he said this (the Jim here being Jim Bowden)

Steve Phillips and Ralph are exactly the type of guys who have solid sources in the Orioles org because there are the same type of idiots running the team as they are and probably ran orgs together in the past.

It probably was mostly fun for them because they knew they could swindle guys in the end 9 times out of 10 but at the same time they probably hated it because it was probably always a moving target and wildly ranging valuations for transactions that they had to be driven crazy.

Done deal. Judging by the reaction, doesn’t seem like it’s a really severe package that LA had to give up?

Russell, Happ, Schwarber, and Monty. LOL. The writers in this industry are so horsefeathering bad

haha, exactly what i was thinking. is russell along better than the package they got? probably.

also gives me hope that we can package together some crap from our system to get something meaningful.

We could get a better package for Russell alone than what the Orioles got for Machado, so yes Russell alone would’ve gotten it done.

Am I imagining things are wasn't there a part in Moneyball where Beane said he liked working with Hendry for these reasons, or now that I'm thinking more about it was it something about him being surprised the Cubs took Brownlie because it was a surprisingly good pick. If that's the case Beane got the last laugh on that one... however they picked Blanton 3 picks later who 14 years later served up one of the most glorious dongs in Cubs history so we win.

Just hope he doesn't sign a long term deal with LA in offseason

He doesn't really fit there when they're healthy. Machado isn't a good SS and Seager is, so Machado would have to acquiesce to playing 3B full time. They'd also have to move Turner to 1B and Bellinger to their crowded OF.

I guess you could see something like this:

C - Grandal

1B - Turner

2B - Taylor

3B - Machado

SS - Seager

LF - Kemp

CF - Bellinger

RF - Puig

Bench - Muncy, Hernandez, Barnes, Pederson

And I guess deploy Muncy as a utility type and Bellinger spelling Turner. This would all only be possible if Machado accepts a move to 3B longterm. I don't see it happening, personally.

I finally read Moneyball recently and I think I remember that. Beane wanted Brownlie and was surprised we took him.
