Russell could easily have been included in these talks. His off field horsefeathers and his lack of improvement at the plate could easily have the FO soured on him. He's not a guaranteed superstar at this point.

Personally, I think he's still going to get better. But, the off field stuff has me not caring if he stays or goes.

And none of this matters, since they're evidently keeping him, unless offers improve by a lot. horsefeathering Orioles lol.

What off the field stuff? He’s a serial cheater who doesn’t know how to use a prophylactic?

The thing where his wife's friend strongly implied an accusation of physical abuse in a since-deleted instagram comment.

The inclusion of Russell isn't about trading him, but about trading him for Machado. Think he's a bad person, or his injuries are going to rob his potential, or the bat will never come around? Fine. But trading him for one year of another shortstop(especially one who gets much of their value from defense and has 52 career MLB games at SS) doesn't make much sense to me. Use other stuff to get Machado and then use Russell to get the pitcher those other guys couldn't bring. If you can't get Machado without Russell, then just move on, you still have Baez if you're desperate to trade Russell.

I'd love to know how our FO values Addy, Javy, Schwarber, Happ, and Almora versus how other teams do. I'd literally have them in the order I just listed them, from a value standpoint. But, there's not a single possibility of orders that'd actually surprise me either. Plus, service time starts becoming a factor in value at this stage too, now that some of these guys only have 4 years of control at this point.

any order with almora ahead of addy, schwarber, or javy would shock the hell out of me.

While most any order wouldn’t “shock” me I think just reading the tea leaves of what they say I think they pretty clearly have Russell and Schwarber at the top in a tier of their own, Javy is in the next tier by himself and then Almora and Happ in the last tier in some order. And that’s probably how I’d rank them too.

Use other stuff to get Machado

lol what other stuff

"Well we can't offer Addison Russell but you could have [squints at our top 30] Bobson Dugnutt?"

You're crazy if you think I'm giving up 6 years of control with dognutt.

Well we sure aren't gonna trade Steve McDichael, are we?

More seriously, Happ, Almora, and Montgomery are the names that leap to mind, though not all of them. If that's not enough to sway Baltimore, I'm okay missing out on one year of Machado and still having the best infield in the game.

Happ, Monty, Ademan and Alzolay should’ve been more than enough for him and Britton (before the injury).

Apparently the Orioles were holding out for KB, Contreras, and Rizzo to be included.

yo can I change my username to bobson dugnutt

this question still stands

we may never know what it is the mods actually do around here

I sometimes confuse bd811 with bcl412. If I changed his name to bobson dugnutt then I'd confuse him with your old name. I decided to not make the change out of respect to bd811.

The source sure could've implied that the talks included all 3 of those players but it doesn't say that we offered all of them in a package together.

Honestly the only available players I want to move Addy for would be Archer or Yelich. I don't see our guys pulling the trigger on Addy+ for him unless it includes Gausman coming back, which is what I figure Thoyer is trying for, if they make that swap.

Cafardo said we've had the most substantive talks on Machado. Bringing up Russell, Almora, and Montgomery again. No idea if he was going off the Orioles guy report or if there's more or less to the deal, if anything.

Brett brought up an idea of not everyone being involved(obviously) but that maybe Russell could be used for pitching.

Adding Machado and Archer would be one hellacious off season.

CF Happ

3B KB

1B Rizzo

SS Machado

LF Schwarber

C Contreras

RF Heyward

2B Baez

Bench Caratini, La Stella, Zobrist, ?

SP Archer, Quintana, Lester, Hendricks, Chatwood

RP Morrow, Cishek, Edwards, Wilson, Strop, Grimm, Maples, ?

That'd be pretty sweet.

To get to my most recent mock, we'd also have to trade for Yelich.

I'd put the odds of getting 1 of those 3 at under 10% honestly. Mainly because I don't see Machado getting dealt and Archer isn't likely to move either, in my mind. And if Yelich hits the market, other teams have more of a need and more to offer too.

I don’t think the O’s are capable of that kind of forward thinking.

At this point (minus a Yelich trade), I'm resigned to them signing Darvish and a couple of relievers and calling it an off-season.

Let the progression/regression of Schwarber and Heyward as well as Russell and Baez determine whether Harper or Machado is a bigger need next off-season.
